Protesters Arrested at Calif. Labor Rally
Protesters Arrested at Calif. Labor Rally

January 21, 2004 08:29 PM EST

LOS ANGELES - Several labor and religious leaders were arrested Wednesday during a rally outside the headquarters of the Vons supermarket chain in support of striking and locked-out grocery workers.

Several hundred protesters gathered outside the offices in suburban Arcadia as part of a newly aggressive strategy to try to force supermarket companies back to the bargaining table to end the dispute, now in its fourth month.

Eleven people were arrested after they marched past barriers into the company's parking lot, sat down and refused to move, the union said.

"We are escalating protests throughout California," said Art Pulaski, head of the California Labor Federation, and one of the 11 people arrested Wednesday. "We will continue until the grocery chains provide affordable health care to workers."

During the weekend, 15 people were arrested at a labor rally in front of a Vons supermarket in Gardena as they tried to block customers from entering.
