I would love to see a green revolution partnered with a union renaissance and immigration reform. I think those three things could truly benefit all Americans.

So many other problems would evaporate if we had it.

3. Word.
I agree 100%. We need national health care now. We must rip our health coverage out of the hands of massive corporations that have anything but the public interest in mind, and put in the hands of the public. Corporate medicine is almost a contradiction of terms. Why would a corporation making millions upon millions of dollars peddling us third rate medication that doesn't really work have any interest in creating medicines that cure illnesses, really looking to cure cancer, and AIDS? They make so much money off cancer patients, why try and find a cure or a preventive medication?

4. Yes, a Manhattan project for becoming sustainable.
That would be good for the economy and the environment. We would need help with education, ways to help green businesses start up, tax breaks for those using renewable energy, and help tranforming our whole transportation infrastructure including funding for local mass transit on a scale never seen before down to the smallest rural town. Empahsis on walkable downtown district again. Focus on small business rather than large corporations. Of course, large corporations would have their place in the world economy but small locales shouldn't have to depend on them for vitality.

Second would be major health care reform. We need national health care.

6. limit the power of political parties
Edited on Sun Oct-19-08 11:50 PM by Poseidan
No political party should be able to challenge the government itself.
Political parties should never amount to mob or majority-rule.
Political parties should do nothing other than benefit the nation.

If political parties could gain only 1/10 of Congress, they would be representative without being oppressive. A green party could be present, offering its expertise on green issues. An efficiency party could be present, offering its expertise on efficiency. Liberal and conservative groups could be present, neither having tyranny-caliber power, simply offering their arguments for critical thinking and public scrutiny.

Political parties, as they are now, have too much influence over everything, and the influence is more often bad than good.

Majority-rule Democracy always was a tragic failure and always will be. Our Democracy is not supposed to be mob-rule; it is only because of political parties our Democracy has become mob-rule.

15. If political parties controlled only 1/10 of Congress at most,
they would only be able to pass legislation if they joined in coalitions. Some of the worst governments are those that are dominated by coalitions of minority parties. If political parties did not exist, they would form. If you outlawed them, they would be replaced by the same kinds of coalitions under other names.

Our parties change a lot over time so that they represent different interests at different times. In a sense, each party is a coalition of different points of view. Sorry, Poseidon but I think the change you envision and hope for would be rather superficial.

7. the right-wing worldview needs to be almost universally shunned
before I could consider America to be great. To do that, we need better education, and some laws to inhibit right-wing hate speech. That would reduce the scope of the first amendment, but that's what it would take.

9. Truth and reconciliation hearings
in return for amnesty from prosecution for war crimes and crimes against humanity, I would like to see hearings that expose the truth about the last 8 years.

we NEED this or we will face the same b.s. in four years, and then in 8 years. we MUST STOP the republican hate machine and this is how to do it.

If the democrats fail to do this, they will have failed as leaders. period.

16. Absolutely, the war, Katrina, denial of global warming,
greed, greed again and greed yet again, corruption, lying about everything from the rate of inflation to the level of unemployment to the war and on and on. We need either truth and reconciliation hearings or, in many instances, prosecutions. Sorry, but some very serious crimes have been committed. If you or I committed such crimes or equivalent crimes in our own lives, we would be prosecuted. The eavesdropping on American citizens and surveillance of innocent people are inexcusable crimes against those who were the victims of the illegal activities. Those who committed those crimes and violations of the Constitution must be prosecuted or held to answer in courts of law.

11. Universal - Single Payer Medical Care for All - Not Obama's Plan!
I am 100% behind Obama for President, but I believe that we will need to celebrate his election, then get to work to organize a national movement to implement a Universal - Single-Payer Medical Care system for all Americans - like most industrial nations. Not private medical insurance, like Obama is proposing. We have to get the greedy insurance companies out of the picture, get them from being in between us and our dcotors. Health care is so expensive because the insurance industry takes 20% or more off the top to administer health insurance. An many of us with health insurance are denied treatment far too often.

There will need to be a movement so strong, like the civil rights movement of the 1960's that forced Kennedy and Johnson to get the Civil Rights Bill passed. I am thrilled to finally see one of us get elected President and will give my support, but not for policies that do not advance the rights and opportunities of the vast majority of Americans - working families, seniors, physically and mentally disabled people, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, military and their families, etc - in other words - US!

There are a few other areas where we are going to have to educate President Obama - such as there is no such thing as "Clean Coal" or that "Nuclear Power" is not an option! Come on Barrack - you are smarter than that! I say this knowing that Obama is a moderate Democrat - not much of a Liberal, nor even a Progressive. He sometimes supports such policies, but his history and tendency is to be cautious, moderate and works the middle to get things done! For sure, not a bad thing given the past eight years! He will get a lot done, and will move things forward given the horrible mess he will inherit on January 20th. I am not being too cocky that he will get elected, but we do need to be ready to start the real work on November 5th - after the party! ;>)

13. Big money out of politics. ALL money out of politics.
Distribution of "Free speech" is now controlled by money.

Also, the airwaves are "owned" by the public. Return to the days when candidates got automatic coverage without money changing hands. Equal time, too (oooh that scares the repigs!)

Fairness. Old doctrine or otherwise, but it worked, so don't waste money "fixing" it to secretly favor anybody.

Sunshine. No, really this time.
