X-mas with a Conservative Democrat.......
My friend calls himself a Conservative Democrat, and I'm at his house right now. I had dinner and spent the night over here, as we are both from the same reservation in MT and now live in AZ, far away from family etc. He does have his Freeper-like moments. His views on gays and welfare are particularly nasty. He isn't pro-choice either, but I usually don't hold that against people since it is a tough issue to deal with morally. I am pro-choice, yet I wrestle with the issue all the time. I usually only correct people when they start spewing wild propaganda regarding abortion.

Just on the ride over here he had me riled up about the estate tax. He doesn't believe we should ::ahem:: "tax the dead." Nevermind that they are filthy rich and leaving huge estates to someone else free of charge at the expense of our services. He used the "L" word negatively several times. Of course, he hates it when I call him a "regressive." All in all, it's in good fun.

Until he started railing on Kucinich. He had me pretty fired up there for awhile.

His one saving grace all night -besides all the food he and his sister cooked - was that he said he's going to vote for John Kerry.

Not a bad choice for a wannabe Freeper, haha.

1. From the res, huh?
What tribe? What are his thoughts on the suppression of Native American religion in this country? Just curious.

3. Blackfeet
I doubt he's even thought about that at all. Whenever I bring up manifest destiny or something like that his solutions are either "get over it" or "times have changed and the world is a different place."

Somehow PNAC's bid to reform and modernize Islam is suspiciously like manifest destiny. Hmmmmmmm.........

For many Manifest Destiny never ended.

9. Manifest Destiny and all that
I'm white, and I'm not getting over it. It was the greatest crime in American history, and it's still with us. We will not live in a peaceful world until we rid ourselves of it.

15. PNAC
What's PNAC? You must be new to this site. Nine posts, of course you are. ;) Get used to seeing it here - a lot!

PNAC = Project for the New American Century. Here's the site: <http://www.newamericancentury.org/> Read their position papers.

Also, you can do a Google search to see a world of stories on them and former members Perle, Cheney, etc.

2. Check out this site about the estate tax
www.networklobby.org
Network is Catholic Social and Economic Justice Lobby organization.
Type in estate tax or tax under search.
Has a great quote from Andrew Carnegie about estates.
Also, the estate tax is not a tax on "death", it is a tax on the transfer of wealth/property.

4. wow a conservative democrat supports Kerry
being Kerry is one of the more liberals. My more conservative democrat grandfather is for Gephardt, I think he is more conservative on social issues such as gays and choice, I am not sure though, but hes new deal like on economics, and actually kinda dovish, he opposed Kosovo and the current Iraq War.

6. he likes Kerry because he used to be in the military too
He's under the impression that Kerry is pretty conservative. He also believes Dean is ultra-liberal.

He watches Hannity and Colmes a lot. That pretty much tells you it all right there.

7. well he'll probably not change
and be grateful, i guess, that he'll vote for kerry.
your friend displays what is so frustrating these days -- peoples beliefs are damn near rooted in superstition. i.e. the estate tax, etc.
so what do you think of az -- far cry from mt physically. i used to live there -- as a gay person it was very uncomfortable.
i love montana but have never lived there.

8. I like it down here
I live in Tucson. I never lived in warm weather before, so it's nice. Summers get brutal though.

Montana is beautiful, however if AZ made you uncomfortable than MT would freak you out. Not too tolerant about gays, minorities and such. I find too much narrow-mindedness there. Not everybody, but more than suits me.

10. MT Republican rancher turned Democrat
On NBC news a couple of weeks ago. The bushco policy to open up the Rocky Mountain front to gas development opened his eyes.

Just one man, but I hope it gives you hope on this Christmas day.

13. I saw that...been telling all my freeper hunting friends to consider that
the animals they love to hunt require sufficient environmental needs to sustain the population; many of them are starting to think about that. The arguments for 'we hunters have a right to our guns' becomes pretty moot when there is nothing left to hunt, and what do you suppose will happen then?

"Don't think it won't happen just because it hasn't happened yet."

16. Re: "X-mas with a Conservative Democrat......."
Id like to say that I understand what its like spending the holidays or any day with someone who is conservative, my Father for example can never make it through a whole day with out gay bashing, or making it know that you cannot be a Catholic and be pro-choice.
I, being a senior in high school, cant do much but nod, pretend I listen, and think "How did my once Democrat father suddenly become brainwashed?". Then I remember the answer, "Democrats these days have no morals, and after the Clinton years Ive lost all respect."
Apparently my father thinks It will be the end of the world If a Democrat gets elected, "History repeats its self, and the States will fall like the Roman empire if a Democrat brings all the filthy corruption that there known for." I then realize that my father, who I get my so-called intelligence and wit from, doesn't have a clue about what he says.
So vote Kerry '04, It'll be a party.
