Sorry I have to scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was just told By a Gay conservative that I should be lucky Bush is president. It is Bush and Santorum and their kind making sure we have our rights!

I was so dumbfounded I was finally at a loss for words. I was speechless. Needless to say when I finally got my composure back the neocon was gone. It's a good thing too, we were in a Gay establishment and I don't believe I would have had any trouble getting a lynch mob. And waht pisses me off even more is that i would even think of rounding up a lunch mob. I was so infuriated.

I have yet to this day to even try to think of why any Gay person would support this Administration. It just boggles my mind!

forget the propaganda, forget the media spin, forget all the right-wing pundits shouting over the air-waves what to think and what to believe in.

I mean it's just sort of a joke around here that freepers can't spell. I didn't notice any misspellings in your post, and I wasn't looking for any.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. My apologies. :hi:

8. Question
I am a straight male, so maybe I'm missing something. Why is it so important for gay folks to be recognized because of who they sleep with? People are people. Believe me, no one cares about sexual preference anymore. Let it rest. It's all good.

9. Please don't take this the wrong way.
Has everything to do with who you sleep with. Just recently the Supreme Court told 12 States that they could no longer put us in jail and or prison for who we sleep with in the privacy of our oun homes, thats just for starters.

10. An answer
It's important because society demeans us continuously, but it makes us stronger. I KNOW that the whimmies (WhiteHeteroMales) couldn't take 1/10 of what a gay man takes every day. Many would be out shooting up the mall and proclaiming the rightousness of the act. You want us to just FORGET IT? The society won't let us.
As to the conservative gay: I guess we are getting some measure of equality when gays can be just as stupid as the Whimmies.
I apologize to the truly open-minded straights out there, but you're few in number, and the even fewer of you who will protest when the goonsquads come to take us to the camps to re-educate us (and, not coincidentally, to confiscate our wealth) into hetero bliss (which some of you have, and I AM happy for you) will be made into very clear examples of brutality for their support. The rest of you will turn away, muttering that, maybe after all we DID deserve it. But those goonsquads: who knows who their next target will be. If I sound bitter it's because I work with whimmies and to a man, though none exhibit any REAL manly qualities, they are as sad a collection of petty-minded, proudly ignorant pipsqueaks as is my misfortune to know.

13. Interesting way to phrase your question:
"Why is it so important for gay folks to be recognized because of who they sleep with?"

This is not how I understand the issue of Gay rights. They are not asking to be recognized because of who they sleep with. They are asking for equal rights and equal treatment, in spite of who they sleep with.

16. no one cares about sexual preference anymore?
It seems to me a lot of conservatives care a lot about sexual preference when it happens to be homosexuality, and want to basically criminalize same sex relationships. I don't know how you manage to miss this when people like Sen Santorum publicly liken homosexuality to bestiality and pedaresty and imply that if gays are allowed to have sex it will lead to the downfall of civilization. Maybe that's why some gays don't want to take a sanguine "let it rest" attitude towards this, perhaps they see their fundamental human rights at risk here.

19. Many answers to your question:
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 02:46 PM by nm3damselfly
(a) It's not about sleeping with anyone. It's about people being marginalized because they fall in love with people from the same gender. The Repukes and Fundies define it as whom you sleep with.

(b) It's not about sleeping with anyone. It's about civil rights!

(c) It's not about sleeping with anyone. It's about people being denied basic dignity and respect because they fall out of the invisible boundaries of what the dumbass "majority" define as "normal."

(d) It's not about sleeping with anyone. It's about fearful people looking for any way possible to push "different" people out of the pack.

On edit: fixed typos.

with the current political climate over at your end, gays would probably not quite agree that "nobody cares about" that anymore (re Ashcroft's position toward gays, and all the rest of the clowns in the government).

The US and some of its states have, from what I can gather, extremely repressive legislation against gay people (andI imagine being gay in the deep south isn't too easy, c'est vrai?). As a European I'm dumbstruck that there still are powerful, influential groups (not to mention large parts of the Republican party) over at your end that try to win political credibility points by patronising the gay community. In my country being gay is not even a discussion topic in the political sector, although our very own idiots in the Christian Democratic party try their very best.

So of course, for enlightened people such as ourselves, gay or not gay is no issue, and that's obviously exactly how it's supposed to be, but when your government is comprised of and elected by complete morons and religious fanatics, the clever people are in a minority.

11. Some of my best friends are gay
(I was an airline employee for ten years, you gay guys understand) and I've long thought it would be quite tough to be gay and to have political/social/economic opinions that are in line with what the Republican party used to be, and to have to face up to the fact the Republicans hate us.

14. Consider that the person isn't just gay.
Edited on Mon Sep-15-03 08:39 PM by Jackie97
The person might make a lot of money on his job, and would not like to be taxed a lot. He might rather see people who make less money spend more in taxes.

Perhaps he's a gun owner who would slit his throat before giving up his guns.

Perhaps he's doing something in the community that gives his respect as being the "good gay" (sort of like a "good negro").

Maybe he's anti-choice, and wishes to see Roe vs. Wade get overturned.

Maybe he doesn't like black people very much, so he doesn't want to see them get more rights.

Maybe 9/11 scared the hell out of him, and he puts his trust in Bush to keep him alive.

He's not just gay. Something makes him and a few others in every minority support oppressors.

Frankly,I'm really disgusted over the blazing bullshit self serving ignorance and domination rightwingers attempt to exert over culture,society..ect.The wingnuts are losing control and they are taking it out on any EZ scapegoat they can find ,that's demoralized enough to sell out thier soul and sense of justice and compassion to them.
And the fact people support freepy agendas because of selfishness,fear,stupidity,greed..ect. it's sad as shit people are so willing to sell thier own souls to drink from the poisioned cup of dominion..

I am trangendered(FtM) and bi and married to a male who's bi too..I get misunderstood even in the gay community .

Sometimes when you assert your own innate human dignity,in the face of those who would destroy dignity and spirit you will get hurt anyway. So knowing this I simply refuse to let some bully strip me of my dignity,of my autonomy, and joys or take away my integrity and spirit. They can threaten me, kill me and maim me but they will not make me submit to them and sell out my own soul ~ ever.

So,If I die fighting ignorance with my resistance I know at least will die a free and untamed person and in this way,I will live on,no matter what anyone with'power' and hegemony thinks..

I have been chased by bullies with churchy tee shirts through the woods with knives, because I was a pagan"dyke" bitch. I happened to walk past them on a sidewalk. They started to lunge after me,I ran up a steep hill..through some tall weeds and into the woods, they were a bit behind, and I didn't have enough time to escape so I climbed up a tree..below I saw them looking for me knives glinting.Eventually they gave up looking, none of them thought to look up..

A few days later, one of these guys was at the bus stop without his freinds. That day I looked more"female" and my pentagram was tucked away,so he started a conversation with me,he was flirting, totally unaware of who I was. We talked awhile..Then he asked me for my phone number.I said to him If you want my number you have to answer me a question. As the bus came, and I was getting ready to go ,I asked him why in the hell was he running after me with a knife a couple of days ago with his buddies,? Is chasing me with a knife an example of the sort of characteryou have? Give me one reason why I would want to give my number to a sexually represeed bigoted bully like you are?

After a minute,he finally recognized me, he had a horrified expression,as I waved to him from on the bus, as he stood in the rain.

I never saw the asshole or his buddies again.

17. more to it than at first thought
At a quick glance (from a hetero perspective) it may seem like no-one cares about who anyone sleeps with anymore but there are significant areas of discrimination that gay people have to overcome that wouldn't neccesarily even cross the mind of a straight person until like me they had it pointed out to them by patient gay friends.

In Oz

* a gay partner can not claim veterans/pension benefits. That money is earnt by the service of those men/women and if their partners are denied access to it then they are not being treated in the same manner as the partner of a straight veteran

* a straight couple after six months of co-habitation will be considered legally "defacto" and receive the property and other rights that go along with that

* Superannuation and wills are another area where the chips are stacked against gay people - if I die without a will all my property would instantly go to my boyfriend as we've lived together for three years however my neighbours who have lived together for over twenty years and raised two children would HAVE to have a will to ensure the surviving partner gets the property otherwise it would instantly go to their respective parents - VERY odd considering one has had no contact with his family for decades. Why my relationship should be valued over and above their long standing loving one is beyond me.

* When was the last time a gay 14/15 year old was able to sit in the school yard holding hands with his boyfriend??????????????

I assume these laws are similar in the US - we also only removed homosexuality from the criminal code ten years ago - there's a LONG way to go before society can really say that no-one has an issue with (hetero/homo/bi)sexuality

I know that you weren't being literal about lynching someone, but that's still an awful thing to say because someone has an opinion differing from yours. It would have been interesting to hear why that person felt that way.

26. Even More Mind Boggling...
"I have yet to this day to even try to think of why any Gay person would support this Administration. It just boggles my mind!"

Even more mind boggling than a gay man voting for W., is a working man--W. has fairly broad support among working class Americans I'm told.

Hey, he may screw you out of your overtime, chuck what few OHSA safety regulations your employer actually pays attention to, kill the superfund that threatened to deplete all the dioxin in that grimey creek you can't afford to move away from, but at least he isn't a damned smarty-pants librul elitist like Al Gore!!
