ChiTrib Editor Rood, crewmates Lambert &Runyon verified Kerry-&no TVmedia?
Why are these stories not on Broadcast News - will they be on talking heads tomorrow?

Veteran backs Kerry on Silver Star account
8/21/2004, 5:34 p.m. ET The Associated Press

The commander of a Navy swift boat who served alongside Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry during the Vietnam War stepped forward Saturday to dispute attacks challenging Kerry's integrity and war record.

William Rood, an editor on the Chicago Tribune's metropolitan desk, said he broke 35 years of silence about the Feb. 28, 1969, mission that resulted in Kerry's receiving a Silver Star because recent portrayals of Kerry's actions published in the best-selling book "Unfit for Command" are wrong and smear the reputations of veterans who served with Kerry.

Rood, who commanded one of three swift boats during that 1969 mission, said Kerry came under rocket mand automatic weapons fire from Viet Cong forces and that Kerry devised an aggressive attack strategy that waspraised by their superiors. He called allegations that Kerry's accomplishments were "overblown" untrue.<snip>

Rood's recollection of what happened on that day at the southern tip of South Vietnam was backed by key military documents, including his citation for a Bronze Star he earned in the battle and a glowing after-action report written by the Navy captain who commanded his and Kerry's task force, who is now a critic of the Democratic candidate.<snip>..also at: http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/082204Y.shtml and discussed at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5771731 and at http://www.washingtondispatch.com/article_9865.shtml

2.) Robert Lambert:

<snip> Three Navy men won Bronze Stars for their actions that day: Kerry, Thurlow, and radarman first class Robert Eugene Lambert, a petty officer in the boat captained by Thurlow. The citation for
Lambert's Bronze Star--previously undisclosed but obtained today under the Freedom of
Information Act from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis--repeats the description
of the incident included in the citation for Thurlow's Bronze Star: "all units came under small arms
and automatic weapons fire from the river banks."<snip>

The difference was that Kerry, who had tactical command of that particular operation, had talked to Droz and me beforehand about not responding the way the boats usually did to an ambush. We agreed that if we were not crippled by the initial volley and had a clear fix on the location of the ambush, we would turn directly into it, focusing the boats' twin .50-caliber machine guns on the attackers and beaching the boats. We told our crews about the plan. <snip>

The first time we took fire--the usual rockets and automatic weapons--Kerry ordered a "turn 90" and the three boats roared in on the ambush. It worked. We routed the ambush, killing three of the attackers. The troops, led by an Army adviser, jumped off the boats and began a sweep, which killed another half dozen VC, wounded or captured others and found weapons, blast masks and other supplies used to stage ambushes. <snip>

We called Droz's boat up to assist us, and Kerry, followed by one member of his crew, site. Some who were there that day recall the man being wounded as he ran. Neither I nor Jerry Leeds, our boat's leading petty officer with whom I've checked my recollection of all these events, recalls that, which is no surprise.<snip>

Soldier with Kerry in '68 says he earned first medal
Monday, August 16, 2004 Bill Sloat Plain Dealer Reporter Trotwood, Ohio

An Ohio factory worker who was with John Kerry on a dangerous night mission 36 years ago in Vietnam said he has no doubt Kerry was grazed in a firefight and deserves his first Purple Heart for a combat injury.

"We were on about a 14-foot boat with an outboard motor. We started out, taking a guess, around 10 p.m. We were sup posed to sneak up and check sampans," said Pat Runyon, a 58-year-old grandfather from Eaton, a small southwestern Ohio town near the Indiana border.

<snip>Runyon said he remembers the incident clearly because it was the first time he had been in combat. "I hadn't seen any kind of action or anything," he said. He said Kerry, Zaledonis and himself were the only men aboard. When he got the motor started, they took off. He said the outboard was in bad condition and did not have a handle to steer with. "I had to wrap my arms around it, like hugging it, to turn it," he recalled.

<snip> Runyon said he introduced himself to the Massachusetts senator and Kerry did not remember him. "When I talked to him about that night, he remembered the incident but not my name. He just eased up once he knew I was who I said I was."

Runyon said that firefight with Kerry is his brush with fame. "I saw a nice, quiet guy who knew he was in command and didn't flaunt it. He could make a decision, and he made the right one because we got out of there alive. That's all I can tell you."

Friendly Fire: The Birth of an Anti-Kerry Ad
By KATE ZERNIKE and JIM RUTENBERG Published: August 20, 2004

After weeks of taking fire over veterans' accusations that he had lied about his Vietnam service record to win medals and build a political career, Senator John Kerry shot back yesterday, calling those statements categorically false and branding the people behind them tools of the Bush campaign.<snip>

More Republican Ties Revealed Behind "Swift Boat Vets For Bush", Says Kerry Campaign

U.S. Newswire Fri Aug 20, 6:22 PM ET

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Public records reveal that two of the people in the new "Swift Boat Veterans for Bush" television ad (Kenneth Cordier and Paul Galanti) are Republican activists, as the fact sheet below shows. This is just more proof that Bush's Republican allies are the ones behind this disgraceful smear of John Kerry's military record. It's pretty clear what's going on here. It's no wonder the Bush campaign refuses to condemn this smear.<snip> also discussed at KnightRider http://www.realcities.com/mld/krwashington/9455159.

2. CBS is covering it right now.
They're quoting Rood, and detailing the Swift for Truth ties to the Bush family and cronies.

From there they moved to the ongoing debate of whether Vietnam was worth it. Let me end the debate: No, it wasn't.

3. will Bush/SWV/proof of connection via Ken Cordier go over media's head -&
will Bush/SWV/proof of connection via Ken Cordier go over media's head -& will AP ever correct the implications of its story ?

From the Internet we find that Bush's official Veternans Group had Swift Boat 527 person Ken Cordier was part of the Bush campaign as recently as August 19. But it seems to have gone over the media's head! On Aug 19 Swift Boat anti-Kerry person Ken Cordier is listed:
http://216.239.39.104/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.georgewbush.com%2FVeterans%2FSteeringCommittee.aspx+%22kenneth+cordier%22&btnG=Google+Searchbr%20/
and now he is not listed on the internet site - is this a confession?:
http://www.georgewbush.com/Veterans/SteeringCommittee.aspx

And the AP refuses to correct its story.

Fight Over Kerry's War Record Escalates

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

"In reply, Thurlow issued a statement. "There was no hostile enemy fire directed at my boat or any of the five boats operating on the river that day," it said, adding that the evidence for the citation was drawn from a report that Kerry had filed." - Granted he is quoting Thurlow, but proof of the lie (Wrong initials on write up and many write-ups had those initials) means it is a gross error for the AP to print Thurlows' misinformation that Kerry wrote the after-action report when there is evidence that it is a lie - and I can not even get the AP to correct the story!
