DES MOINES, Iowa - Former President Clinton will be the featured speaker at Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin's annual steak fry and fund-raiser, a traditional political gathering in the state with the leadoff caucuses.
The visit Sept. 13 marks the first trip by the former president to Iowa since he left office.
Harkin hosts the annual event at the Warren County Fairgrounds, just outside Indianola, Iowa, and it draws prominent Democrats and party backers. This year, the Iowa lawmaker also has held a series of town-hall meetings, titled "Hear it From the Heartland," with the Democratic presidential candidates.
The crowded Democratic field of nine gave Harkin too many choices for a keynote speaker. The senator, who has not made his preference known in the presidential primary, decided instead to go with the Democrat who won the presidency in 1992 and 1996.
