1. Can't do it...to poor
I'll just contribute the cash directly. I just read Barbara Eirenreigh's book, pretty sad. Never knew that our motels were the modern slums for the working class. Ever since I read the book, I've noticed that there are a lot of motels going up around the interstates here (in KY), makes me wonder if this increase in semi-homeless motel dwellers caused by the Bush imposed economy is boosting the motel business.

2. Barbara Ehrenreich endorses Kucinich...
I still think that is just so awesome. :)

Maybe some windfall will come your way before the end of the month! I'll be praying for it. :)

3. It can be a shock at first
The first time it really hit me that motels were the new slums came in the early 90s when I was the assistant manager at a fast food restaurant. Most of my employees (contrary to what the right wing tells you) were adults with a high school diploma (if they're lucky), making the minimum wage. Most of them worked 35-39 hours/week, so they didn't qualify for our medical plan (incidentally, our "plan" consisted of membership in the most expensive HMO in the state, which cost us employees $250/month. It was unaffordable for most of the managers, who averaged $18k/yr at the time).

I had at least three employees who lived in a motel nearby, paying $150 per week for a room that was just barely above squalor, and squeezing in their ENTIRE family into it (3-5 people). All because they didn't have good credit or a rental history, or could never scrape enought $$ together for a "measly" $400 deposit on an apartment.

It's absolutely disgusting that this country still has a situation like this for its working poor. We should not only be ashamed, but we should be working together for a solution.

GO DENNIS GO!

4. Well supporting Kucinich is a great start on fixing this problem
as I'm sure Barbara Eirenreich knows. I try to always donate and always help out with people if I can, but that's not organized enough. I think supporting Dennis Kucinich is about the best thing to do for now, and fight for his election, like we do. Of course, we can always do more, like volunteering, but we really need to get this guy elected.

7. Now that is cool.
Didn't he subsidize the arts to put artists to work? Wonder if this was part of that effort... if I'm not mistaken about that in the first place.
