"I'm going to criss-cross this nation to connect the dots and show that this president is collecting his rebate that he gave to the wealthiest people in the country," Kerry said.
Kerry suggested a need to declare energy independence as a means to solve problems of national security, global warming, health and the environment, while offering a national goal similar to the race to the moon in the 1960s.
Such goals are motivators for young people, Dilks said.
"Everybody says that kids don't care, but if you give them or anyone a clear goal, they will go out and do it," she said. "Anyone who can get their campaign together with clear goals can get people out and vote."

Katie Dilks, an Iowa State University graduate student, came to the rally looking for answers about education.
She said the current "No Child Left Behind" policy has too many problems, including punishing high-performing school districts such as Ames because they reach the top end of federal standards and have nowhere to go.
