General Clark Responds to Joe Lieberman's Campaign Ad
General Clark Responds to Joe Lieberman's Campaign Ad
http://clark04.com/press/release/048/
"I am surprised and disappointed by Joe Lieberman's campaign ad, which his campaign released today.

Leadership is about having the courage to ask the tough questions and hold our leaders accountable. Approving President Bush's budget request amounts to giving this administration another blank check in Iraq. The last time Joe Lieberman voted for giving President Bush a blank check, it led to the war in Iraq -- an unnecessary, unilateral, preemptive war. More...

9. Wrong Way Wesley rides again

Before he works himself into a high dudgeon, maybe Mr. Clark should explain why he voiced support for the war while campaigning with Katrina Swett in NH last year; and while he's at it, perhaps he could tell us why he told a gathering at the home of NH State Rep. Marjorie Smith why he supported the war resolution (which he seemed thoroughly familar with, incidentally). When he's done, he could move on to his change of heart on gays in the military, since he told people at Rep. Smith's party that he supported "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", and in fact thought it went too far...

If Clark wants to make this a contest based on straight talk, he will need better coaches than manipulative hacks like Chris Lehane and company.

11. Got any proof? He urged to be cautious in endorsing the
resolution. Based upon a long series of conditions. Swett, the ingrate is Lieberman's campaign chair. I wouldn't wanna take her word as gospel.

Retired Gen. Clark supports Swett, raises concerns about Iraq policy
By STEPHEN FROTHINGHAM,Associated Press Writer
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Retired U.S. Army Gen. Wesley Clark said Wednesday he supports a congressional resolution that would give President Bush authority to use military force against Iraq, although he has reservations about the country's move toward war.
----------------------
The general said he had no doubt Iraq posed a threat, but questioned whether it was immediate and said the debate about a response has been conducted backward.
"Normally in a debate, you start with a problem and consider possible solutions. Instead, the president has presented us with a solution before the problem has been fully articulated," he said.
"As far as the information we have now shows, there are no nuclear warheads on missiles pointed to America," he said. "You can't wait 10 years to act, but there is time on our side."
He said al-Qaida remains the largest terrorist threat against the United States, and the connection ----between al-Qaida and Iraq is unclear.
------------------------
After endorsing Swett in Nashua, he visited Manchester West High School and reassured history students that the threat of terrorism should be kept in perspective.
-----------------------
He said he shares the concerns he hears from many Americans about whether the country should act against Iraq without United Nations support and about how the United States will deal with Iraq after a successful invasion.
He also met in Portsmouth with the Democratic nominee in the 1st Congressional District, state Sen. Martha Fuller Clark.
A spokesman for Clark said the two were meeting to discuss foreign policy.

4. He is following Edwards' ads against the $87 billion BUT
he voted FOR it! Edwards (and Kerry and Kucinich) voted against it. (Gephardt voted for it.) The others just talk.

7. But, but Joe told George off today
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 05:24 PM by lunabush
this is a press release from his campaign so I will quote it in full:

Lieberman Statement On Bush "Mission Accomplished" Mistake
(October 29, 2003)

ARLINGTON, VA Joe Lieberman issued the following statement in response to George Bush's mistaken claim today that sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln had been entirely responsible for the "mission accomplished" banner for Bush's May 1 speech on the carrier. After Bush disavowed reports that his staff had been responsible for the banner, the Associated Press reported today that the White House was indeed involved in helping make the sign:

"Today was another banner day in George Bush's quest to bring honor and integrity to the White House. If he wanted to prove he has trouble leveling with the American people, mission accomplished."

8. Mostly good
But the message should have included a reminder that Lieberman never served. Kerry would have done that.

12. Good response, but
I would have preferred if he replaced "Congress" w/Leiberman's name when he said "Last time...voted for giving...blank check, it led to the war." There's no need to get to direct in your response. Just say you're disappointed and why you disagree. By blowing him off in this manner you don't give Leiberman any more of a spotlight than he deserves. In other words, don't give him the credit of being named more than once in your statement.
