California assemblyman (Strickland) looking at Boxer challenge
Term limits forcing out Legislature’s No. 3 Republican

California Republican Assemblyman Tony Strickland is seriously considering jumping into the race to unseat Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer next year.

Strickland, 33, represents the 37th District — Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and other areas northeast of Los Angeles — in the state Legislature.

Strickland added that he would “make his intentions known” about running for the Senate after the Legislature concludes its work on the budget. That is likely to happen in early fall.

Another GOP consultant cast doubt on Strickland’s chances. “He’s a termed-out politician who probably doesn’t have the kind of base needed for a real run,” the consultant said, adding that in the absence of a strong candidate Strickland might be tempted to run.
