94. LOL...not a good idea
Don't forget, if Dean becomes president, he will have to work with Kerry and the other senators. He does not need to create more ill will than necessary by winning the Massachusetts primary. Besides, by that point probably it will be down to 2 candidates, either Dean or Kerry vs. one of the more moderate candidates.

8. they have done a good job advancing this event
It is a good strategy too. It is all about delegates and if Dean can come in a solid and strong second to Kerry in Ma. he gets a good share of the states delegates, and if Kerry gets out of the race before the Ma primary--if he loses Iowa and NH--and Dean wins then Dean would be well positioned to win the state.

87. Evidently not so in New England's 2nd largest city
At an outdoor rally in Copley Square before about 2,500 supporters, Dean invoked the spirit of the American Revolution and said U.S. citizens are "no longer willing to accept an administration lying to the American people about the reasons for sending our sons and daughters and brothers and sisters to die in a foreign land."

"While Dean drew a young and enthusiastic crowd, it was not exceptionally large in an area where about 100,000 college students are within a subway ride of Copley Square."

Providence is the 2nd largest city in New England. The writer didn't seem to think the crowd was as large as claimed or that it was exceptional considering the number of college students in the area.

I cast my first vote for John Kerry in 2002 (in part because he was unopposed). I then called his office and asked them to sign onto Kennedy's anti-resolution resolution as a means of redemption. They said no. I wasn't particularly happy.

I'm for Dean now. That's one more for Dean in Newton!

28. MA City Councilor Ken Reeves Endorses Dean
http://blogforamerica.com/

From the press department:

Cambridge, Mass., City Councilor Ken Reeves. Reeves, who was mayor of Cambridge from 1992 to 1995, was the first African-American mayor in Massachusetts and the first openly gay African-American to lead a city in the United States.

“I absolutely am excited to support a candidate for president for whom being black or gay is a non-issue,” Reeves said. “Howard Dean’s vision of inclusion will put our country back on the right track. Dean’s message is the best chance of beating President Bush.”

Responding to Council Member Reeves’ endorsement, Governor Dean said. “This campaign is about uniting and empowering all Americans—and ensuring that every citizen is equal under the law. Throughout his career Ken has been both a trailblazer and passionate defender of civil rights. I look forward to working with him on these issues in the months ahead.”

endorsements don't mean shit. For the most part I think people think for themselves (freeps excluded). I think the only time endorsements come into play is when judges or unknowns are on the local ballot.

But that's just me.

and I only need endorsements for judges because I just don't pay attention to politics at that level. So if I know enough about one person to vote for him or her and she says that she supports a certain judge, it has a modicum of weight.

If its no big surprise, its no big deal.

Endorsement announcements are useful, though, because they afford an opportunity for someone to say something positive about the candidate.

When I saw Dean speak in Chicago at Navy Pier, he finished up and I thought he'd be shuffled away out of the ungodly heat. My friend and I started to leave, walking in the opposite direction and suddly Dean was standing right next to us. He had to clambor past chairs and a few other obstacles to get into a position to shake people's hands and converse with them.

I was shocked to say the least. I don't think anyone would have blamed him for sprinting to air conditioning as that was exactly what I was doing.

I just left because the winds are way up and rain is due

He has the right phrases - and the crowd appreciated him.

But the weather forecast kept the crowd way down - perhaps a 1000 in the square - a few thousand more outside the barrier.

They openned the area at 11 am but Dean began at 12:15 -- no real way to walk about so I did not see Will or Matcom or the usual DU suspects.

Did not have feel of a political rally - Dean is not as smooth as JFK, Bobby Kenndy, or Ted, or Sharpton - but compares OK with the rest of the field. And the Deanies feel/act dedicated.

It was a nice way to spend lunch!

100. That may have happened at the Young Democrats Convention
My friend there from Minnesota said that his delegation was sitting right behind the Massachusetts delegation when Dean spoke, and he said at first they all sat on their hands, but eventually they could not resist getting up and cheering like everyone else. I doubt that they became Dean supporters...they seemed pretty loyal to Kerry...but it was kind of cool how even they were unable to just sit quietly when Dean spoke.

Dean supporters, please, help get it up there...if we don't make this goal, no matter how much we raise, the focus in the media will be on failure to make the goal. So please, donate what you can. Every little bit helps and the more momentum we show now, the more likely we are to make it, because if it seems like we have no chance of making it many people will not bother to give at this time.

98. That's cool
But it does not necessarily mean much...we did not see a ton of Dean bumper stickers when we were in Vermont...there is not much of a point in putting them on their cars unless they go into New Hampshire a lot, because if anyone has never heard of someone who has been their governor for 11 years, they probably are not going to vote or pay attention anyway. So Massachusetts people might feel no need to put Kerry bumper stickers on their cars for the same reason...unless they are near the New Hampshire border. Is that where you live? If you live near the NH border and see more Dean signs than Kerry signs, that is surprising.

63. Is The What The Dean Blog Looks Like?
You guys sound like a verbal circle jerk. The pics didn't show that many people, but I believe you. I see lots of white college kids there, most likely from the surrounding states. I thought I saw a black guy in one of the pics, but it was actually Jeanne Shaheen.

65. quite a quandry you've got there
so what are you going to believe, the pics or your lying eyes?

Isn't Boston made up of lots of white college kids? I saw banners for MIT for Dean, Yale Law students for Dean, BU for Dean and UMASS for Dean. I'll give you that most of the students in those schools are from out of state.

Do you really believe that the crowd was bussed in white college kids?

Look at the pictures again, of course its entirely possible that the white college kids nabbed their grandparents for the busride too.

66. I just heard that Dean will probably be coming to Howard U. in DC
How ya like him now? (ref. to a Kool Moe Dee rap...I'm a little bit old school, I'm a little bit Dr. Dre...)

BTW: here's a site from someone at MIT who took lots of pix:

http://web.mit.edu/donglai/www/dean2004/20030923/pics/

Your mission, Dr. F, should you choose to accept it: Identify each of the people from surrounding states in these pictures and expose this rally for the fraud you say it is.

If you're caught in the illogic of your own statements, the Senator will disavow any knowledge of you.

Good luck, F. This post will self-destruct in five seconds...

What percentage of the crowd is from out of state?

10%?
50%?
100%?

Or practically none?

Bonus question. Point out the Freedom Riders in this pic:

Extra, extra bonus points. Point out Howard Zinn.

102. I really want to go to that and the rally outside the DNC meeting
But i have two classes that I would miss, so I am not sure what to do. Probably I will not miss class unless I can get into the DNC meeting, which I doubt...I have seen Dean speak 9 times and I would love to see him again but I am not sure I can justify missing class...I'll have to see as it gets closer

77. do you have a problem with white college kids?
Damn it,

This is why no one my age votes. Every time we get excited
about someone, they tell us we're white middle-class assholes
who're only interested in money. Then we become white middle-class
assholes who are only interested in money. Show us the love!

BTW- MA is a pretty white state. Sure in Boston proper, you've
got a substantial black population, but it's not huge like in
New York or Chicago or DC.

95. Yeah, what's wrong with white college kids
I'm a white college kid - got a problem with that? :D

I do understand what you are saying...we do have a lack of diversity at rallies, but it is a problem we are working hard to overcome, and it is getting better. The last few events I have attended have been a lot more diverse than the earlier ones. And I think other campaigns are having some trouble with this too...a Kucinich person told me that they are struggling to make their group more diverse, and I am not sure how Kerry's campaign is doing on that front but I saw pictures of his kickoff speech in South Carolina and the crowd looked pretty white.

96. Actually, if anyone wanted to spin that with as many rpm
...as the Dean haters do with everything, one could observe that the others are lacking diversity despite coming from "less white" states, so they are doing much worse than Dean in relative terms.

79. This is another Dean trucks em in from the entire region
rally.

Just like Tennessee, Johnson City Iowa, and other such events. Deanies from the entire region must come running from distances of hundrds of miles to create an illusion that Dean garners massive support in Massachusetts. But is it just illusion.

In Tennessee, Deans straw poll win was the result of his supporters coming from virtually 2/3rds of the grographical area of the state.

I am sure the same is what has happened in Boston, Where Kerry attracted over 15,000 without calling in his campaign machine.

99. They do not "truck" anyone in
It is true that sometimes supporters, myself included, drive several hours to see him speak, but we do that on our own and the campaign does not pay for it or provide transportation or anything. They do sometimes bus or fly people to New Hampshire to do door-knocking, but not to attend rallies. If they did "truck us in", I'd probably be going to the rally in NYC tomorrow, but since a) I have a quiz, and b) I can't afford to spend $144 for a roundtrip train ticket, I am not going.

For example, the College Dems are busing people to Kentucky on November 4 this year to help get out the vote. Is that objectionable?

106. What?
How is this dishonest? They are not pretending to be anything other than Texans for Dean who came to help with the campaign.

I know, tell us about that fair in Iowa again... :eyes:

Personally, I think it's a brilliant strategy, it gets people involved early who aren't in an early primary state, and gets lots of positive press. Not to mention that it probably impressed a bunch of NH Dems who had their doors knocked on.

Any chance to help Dean before then is awesome!

What is dishonest (& sour grapes!) is calling good campaigning fundamentally dishonest.
