Conservative magazine prints attack on Specter

Tuesday, August 19, 2003

The National Review, a policy magazine, in its Sept. 1 edition published a cover story labeling U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter the worst Republican in the Senate.

Specter, R-Pa., objected to the piece during his radio conference call Friday with Pennsylvania reporters.

"The characterization by the National Review is not surprising, considering my independence," Specter said. "I have a favorable rating according to the polls in excess of 60 percent ... so the people of Pennsylvania don't agree with the National Review. And, obviously, I'm a lot more concerned with what Pennsylvanians think than what the National Review may do to sell its newspapers or publications."

Specter alleged the story played "fast and loose with the facts," claiming there were "a lot of inaccuracies in that story."

"For example, they report that I said to Senator Lott that I would not support an appropriations measure unless he agreed to come to Pennsylvania two times to campaign for me," Specter said. "That's just blatantly false."

The Specter piece was filed by John J. Miller, National Review's top political reporter.
