Kucinich- -Marriage Amendment Divisive
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 04:02 PM by dweller
February 24, 2004
Dennis Kucinich, in response to President Bush's
announcement today on the proposed Constitutional
amendment defining marriage as the union between one
man and one woman, made the following statement:

"I oppose the amendment. Equal protection of the law,
including the right to marry. must be made available to all
Americans regardless of race, color, creed or sexual
orientation The amendment as supported by the president
is a continuation of his divisive policies which are not
worthy of a free nation or a freedom-loving people."

1. Teresa called it "divisive" too...
She sees gay marriage happening, though. (I wish she had a younger sister to fix up with Dennis.)

Teresa Heinz Kerry calls Bush's anti-gay amendment `divisive'

February  25,  2004

San Jose Mercury News

By Lori Aratani
San Francisco, CA -

Teresa Heinz Kerry, philanthropist and wife of Democratic front-runner Sen. John Kerry, swept through the Bay Area on Tuesday, accepting the endorsement of California firefighters on behalf of her husband and dismissing President Bush's backing of an amendment to ban gay marriage as "divisive politics."

"I think culturally we're going through a huge change," Heinz Kerry said. "I look at it in a human context, because I have friends in those situations and it's terrible. All we owe people is dignity, respect and civil rights. I think the country will evolve."

She added that her husband would vote against such an amendment if it's introduced in the Senate, and that while he supports same-sex civil unions, Kerry believes defining marriage should be a question left to the states.

"I think with time and without a lot of politicization of this we'll get there," said Heinz Kerry. "I think our country is basically a tolerant country."

2. We might add diversionary, hiding 9/11 w/o Condi ...
Quick, look over here.
Never mind that a Republican stopped the 9/11 commision from extending its time.
Never mind that Condi will not testify in front of the 9/11 commision.

In fact, print stories on those last two on page 22A in one paper while keeping gay marriage on the front pages everywhere.

3. Kuciniches was the appropriate response.
This is the straightforward kind of statement that Edwards & Kerry should have made.
