A question of tactics
There was a sports talk radio host in my city that pissed off about 50,000 fans of the favorite team in our state by unfairly disparaging a popular player. This host regularly did remote broadcasts from local businesses several times a week, for a fee.

A bunch of us got together on a sports message board and agreed to telephone and E-mail the place of business from where the host was broadcasting on any particular day, and in addition telephone or E-mail sponsors who purchased advertising on the station, informing them that we will never buy their products as long as the host was broadcasting on that station. Our actions had the desired effect.

The host stopped doing remotes for about a month and totally changed his tone about the player and the team.

The idea was probably copied from the gay activists that tanked Dr. Laura's television show.

Is this something that has been tried against Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. . .?

If not, why?

Do some of you think it is a bad idea for any reason?

Thanks for your input and opinions.

1. can't beat the circles.
It would be a tactic of interest, and I am not sure if it's been tried in the past, but I'd say this about it.

It's a diehard conservative station, and liberal reactions are probably not considered high in the demographic.

A bunch of liberals saying, "hey we aren't going to buy your product" on a conservative talk-time is probably not going to have the desired effect. They realize that it's a fiery talk show, but they also realize how MANY people listen to it.

2. It's Not A Bad Idea
It's just there are enough mentally deficient people who worship Hannity and Limbaugh that would call in and idolize the twits that I dodn't think it would work. But, if you know enough people, try it --It just might work.

3. Oh, it's not a 'bad' thing at all
It's effective activism at its best. Bravo!

A similar thing happened at a Cracker Barrel near where I live once. Their policy of firing anyone known or perceived to be gay drew the ire of local gay activists. At the time, CB had a coffee refill policy. So, the local gay community got together one morning, went to Cracker Barrel, and ordered coffee... and coffee... and.. um.. coffee.

All day long. The store lost money, and afterward, that store ended the policy.

4. That was genius!
The opposite of a boycott! Excessive patronization to the financial detriment of the target.

Fascinating.

5. tactics
I think the tactics need to change. Nobody cares if the "liberals" boycott their stuff. When dealing with Hannity/Limbaugh, etc, I think the best thing to do is to cause a disruption in their service. I've called in to Limbaugh's show, instead of doing the natural thing, (ie: calling him a stupid shit), I've agreed with him.. profusely.. that's what they want.. only.. I took it a bit too far.. the topic was the florida election. I stared down the the path of saying that elections should be done away with now that Bush was in. I said "he's the best, and we should keep him on.. no more of this election foolishness".. and the greatest thing, Rush actually started to agree with me..

I think the best thing that we can do is to get these people to admit to their own absurdity, and in doing that, they de-legitimize themselves. However, I think this takes a dramatic change in tactics.

cheers,
-ds
