Activist Corps Action (16 weeks until election): The Truth About John Sidney McCain III
Edited on Tue Jul-15-08 04:03 PM by EarlG
With 16 weeks to go until the 2008 elections, we've decided to reboot the DU Activist Corps. For more information about the Activist Corps, click here.

Last Thursday we started taking suggestions for the first Activist Corps action of 2008, and the most practical suggestions involved spreading the word about the real John McCain. We decided to do this in the form of a viral email. A big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed (see here and here).

DU ACTIVIST CORPS ACTION: SEND THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW

There are two emails here - the second email is sourced, the first is not. Other than that, the two emails are practically identical. They both contain the exact same list of facts. Take your pick, depending on which you think will work best for you.

UNSOURCED VERSION

SUBJECT: Fwd: The Truth About John Sidney McCain III

If you only forward one email this year, make it this one... America needs to know the truth about John Sidney McCain III and the disaster that awaits us if he becomes president. Everything in this email is 100% TRUE and VERIFIABLE! Don't believe it? Check Google or Snopes.

DID YOU KNOW? John McCain came back from Vietnam and cheated on his disabled wife before leaving her and his three children and marrying a rich heiress 17 years his junior. McCain obtained a marriage license for his second marriage while he was still married to his first wife.

DID YOU KNOW? The McCains own ten homes, valued at more than $13 million, including TWO swanky beachfront condos in California. The McCains failed to pay taxes on one of those beach homes for the past four years.

DID YOU KNOW? The McCains have been known to charge hundreds of thousands of dollars IN A SINGLE MONTH on their credit cards.

DID YOU KNOW? John McCain's chief economic adviser, rich Swiss Bank lobbyist Phil Gramm, recently told the Washington Times that the current economic crisis is a "mental recession" and said that America is a "nation of whiners."

DID YOU KNOW? Earlier this year John McCain said, "I don't believe we're headed into a recession, I believe the fundamentals of this economy are strong and I believe they will remain strong." He also stated that, "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should."

DID YOU KNOW? John McCain regularly plays craps for "a few thousand dollars at a time." He loves to gamble and is extremely superstitious.

DID YOU KNOW? John McCain recently called Social Security "an absolute disgrace." McCain was a big supporter of President Bush's unpopular plan to ditch Social Security and replace it with private accounts.

DID YOU KNOW? American taxpayers spend $340 million EVERY SINGLE DAY in Iraq. Yet John McCain thinks it would be okay to keep our brave troops there for up to "one hundred years."

DID YOU KNOW? Disabled American Veterans give John McCain a 20% rating on his voting record for Veterans, the worst score among all 100 senators (tied with Mike Crapo and Larry Craig). The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave him a "D" rating.

DID YOU KNOW? John McCain says he wants to save the environment, but the League of Conservation Voters currently ranks him DEAD LAST among all 535 members of Congress, with a 0% rating.

DID YOU KNOW? McCain has failed to vote on the last 19 environmental bills in the Senate, dating back to 2005.

DID YOU KNOW? Every single day for the first four months of this year 1.6 million barrels of U.S. oil were exported to foreign countries - up 33% from last year - while our gas prices continue to go through the roof. The McCain/Bush solution is to give big oil companies even more opportunities to pollute our coastlines and despoil the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

DID YOU KNOW? The Department of Energy estimates that if we start the McCain/Bush offshore drilling plan today, we could lower gas prices by 6 cents - but not until the year 2025.

DID YOU KNOW? John McCain, like George W. Bush, supports using the form of torture known as waterboarding.

DID YOU KNOW? John McCain will continue George W. Bush's "rich get richer, poor get poorer" fiscal policies. If you make under $112,000 per year you will pay HIGHER taxes under John McCain than under Barack Obama. One quarter of McCain's tax breaks go to people making more than $2.8 million per year.

31. How the hell do you do it?
I can never figure out how to email things from DU.

Cut and paste the whole damned thing?

My "email expertise" is pretty much limited to Forward and Reply.

I have never even figured out how to email pictures.

Heck, I am surprised it only took me two years to figure out how to post or reply on DU (actually, my girlfriend-of-the-moment figured it out, way back when. I got ris of her ass, but I still have DU).

Edited on Tue Jul-15-08 08:35 PM by nam78_two
But, he actually seems slightly below the GOP average in insanity and therefore they aren't warming up to him as fast as they would to someone who is actually certifiably insane like Romney or Huckabee.

Our irritating Republican neighbour is always calling McCain a "liberal" and when I ask for specific things McCain has done that are even remotely liberal, he has no answers. As best as I can tell they peg him as liberal because once upon a time he seemed to mildly care about acting against corruption :eyes:.

That party is just sad.

On the LCV rating of 0%, I believe that he was ranked dead last specifically in 2007. There are people who are ranked lower overall (since there are so many Republicans with awful environmental records).
His being ranked last of all 535 members of congress was specifically in 2007:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/02/22/gro...

It is still a fairly powerful statement-I just think it could be amended to include the fact that that was for 2007.

He has a pretty lousy rating overall but it is 24 or 27 or something like that-not quite 0. Ted Stevens probably has the 0% rating.

30. I see your point
The 2007 scorecard is the most recent one (obviously 2008 isn't over yet), which means that the League of Conservation Voters currently ranks him dead last. The article I've sourced says, "...the League of Conservation Voters gave him a zero rating Thursday on its 2007 congressional scorecard -- making him the lowest-ranking lawmaker among all 535 members of Congress."

I've added the word "currently" to the sentence, I think that should cover it.

22. The problem I have with this...
...is simple.

The personal stuff is at the beginning, and the policy related stuff is at the end. It should be the other way around.

People who are fans of McCain will see the first couple of items and then ignore the rest. They'll call it "sour grapes" or whatever, and then they'll never actually read the stuff at the end that REALLY matters. How many of the guys who get this forwarded to them have cheated on their wives, would LOVE to own 10 homes, or enjoy as good game of craps? They will think that stuff is irrelevant, and will ignore the rest.

My 2 cents worth...

51. Absolutely correct
Sad statement about human nature or not, the scandalous grabs the attention. Few can resist the foibles of the celebrated or a good ole case of self-righteous indignation over what they perceive as a personal attack on a hero...even if the email angers somebody, most will continue to read...

That said, anger at the beginning can sometimes bias the reader to the other facts contained within...but that usually won't stop them from reading the whole email. (gotta feed that indignation)

The odds are on the side of people reading the entire email..and the honest broker will consider the totality of what they've read.

And those who can't get beyond their anger?...well, they'll just go on the defensive ...and that's where you want them...on the defensive.

I'm not getting many 'spam' emails from the Republicans this election cycle. In 2004 I got a lot from people who fell for the FEAR! FEAR! FEAR! mantra. Guess they all finally figured out who and what the fear really was/is. I only wish they saw through it a few (8) years sooner.

101. "viral email" is difficult to create on purpose
It needs a "hook", something that gives people on the 2nd rung of the chain motivation to keep passing it on, like "your nuts will shrivel up if you don't do exactly as I say"; otherwise, why won't a random mutation moran drop the Vietnam paragraph and replace "McCain" with "Obama" on the unsourced version to make it more viscerally appealing to people who read uncritically? Things that are true and/or can be looked up rarely go "viral", at least on Snopes, but you might be able to pass on a poison pill to freepers by wrapping it in a sickly candy shell (for instance replacing every footnote with a Bible verse).

107. Sorry. I refuse to go after any candidates "personal lives.". I will cut and paste

I was told that he voted against increasing veteran's benefits 9 out of the last 10 times, skipping the last vote taken in the Senate last month.

How can he claim he "supports the troops" with that kind of voting record?

Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 04:42 AM by agentS
In my post on the latest breaking news section, I noted that 1/3 of Whites are undecided about McCain.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...
The other 1/3 have a favorable impression of him.

If we can find a group of people who are unaware of him, then that group of people should be where the emails would have the most effect.
If the e-mails get to low-info voters, much like those anti-Obama smear emails did, then that will increase McCain's unfavorable ratings and cost him a swing state, or 2.

158. Sorry, I don't understand why a couple of these issues matter...
"DID YOU KNOW? The McCains have been known to charge hundreds of thousands of dollars IN A SINGLE MONTH on their credit cards."
What is wrong with putting money on your credit cards? It could actually be smart (if you have an incentive plan) or at least convenient if you pay them off in full every month...

"DID YOU KNOW? John McCain regularly plays craps for "a few thousand dollars at a time." He loves to gamble and is extremely superstitious."
And this is bad because...? How often does he do this? Daily? Once a year on vacation? At his level of wealth spending a few thousand on craps is probably the same thing as me spending $10 on scratch off tickets, which I do once or twice a year (and is just as foolish, true). At least he's not moralistic finger-wagger like Book of Virtues author/high stakes gambler William J. Bennett...

I like the rest, though, and agree that the sort order of "juicy" to brass tacks is better...

I've been asked to send out a big THANK YOU to those who compiled this list. It's now helping a number of people to respond to what they get in email.

184. I got one response from my DFA Meetup mailing list.
She said that it's not the truth and that it was "sliced and diced" and that Democrats should be above this kind of thing and instructed me not to send her any more "crap" like this. I don't think that she actually checked any of the references.

I guess that some people just don't want to win. I'm tired of sticking to principles and losing. At this point there's too much at stake to rule out using tools like this. I'm not happy about it, but this is what works in the real world.

I responded and told her that she's on a mailing list and that I can't selectively not send her certain emails and that as long as she's on the list she will receive whatever is sent to it.

it was a delight to dig up some of those saved emails (I knew they would come in handy one day) and hit a reply to all with the copy/pasted talking points above. I've yet to hear back from anyone on their list. Something tells me I won't. So, even if I persuaded no one today, at the very least I can say with reasonable certainty that I will be removed from their distribution list on future mailings.

Randy Scheunemann: McCain Adviser Campaigned for War

By Peter Slevin

CHICAGO -- Randy Scheunemann, the foreign policy adviser to Sen. John McCain who today accused Sen. Barack Obama of a "policy of delusion" toward terrorism, was a prominent advocate of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in the lead-up to the war.

In late 2002, Scheunemann helped create The Committee for the Liberation of Iraq and became the group's executive director. Its mission, pursued with the Bush administration's blessing, was to build public support for the overthrow of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

McCain (R-Ariz.) was on the committee, along with Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), former Secretary of State George Shultz, retired Army Gen. Wayne A. Downing and former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.), who described the project at the time as "a group of people who will talk to Americans about why the liberation of Iraq is something the United States ought to do."

Scheunemann is a longtime GOP foreign policy specialist who has also worked on the staffs of former Senate Republican leaders Bob Dole (Kan.) and Trent Lott (Miss.) He was a board member of the neoconservative think tank, the Project for the New American Century, which often reflected the views of Bush administration hardliners.

In recent years, Scheunemann has registered as a lobbyist for several foreign governments, including Georgia, Macedonia and Taiwan, according to published reports. His firm has also lobbied for the National Rifle Association and defense contractor Lockheed Martin.

220. The truth about Barack Hussein Obama
Barack Obama wears a FLAG PIN at all times. Even in the shower.

Barack Obama says the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE every time he sees an American flag. He also ends every sentence by saying, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Click here for video of Obama quietly mouthing the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE in his sleep.

A tape exists of Michelle Obama saying the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE at a conference on PATRIOTISM.

Every weekend, Barack and Michelle take their daughters HUNTING.

Barack Obama is a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN. He has one HAND over his HEART at all times. He occasionally switches when one arm gets tired, which is almost never because he is STRONG.

Barack Obama has the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE tattooed on his stomach. Its upside-down, so he can read it while doing sit-ups.

Theres only one artist on Barack Obamas iPod: FRANCIS SCOTT KEY.

Barack Obama is a DEVOUT CHRISTIAN. His favorite book is the BIBLE, which he has memorized. His name means HE WHO LOVES JESUS in the ancient language of Aramaic. He is PROUD that Jesus was an American.

Barack Obama goes to church every morning. He goes to church every afternoon. He goes to church every evening. He is IN CHURCH RIGHT NOW.

Barack Obamas new airplane includes a conference room, a kitchen, and a MEGACHURCH.

Barack Obamas skin is the color of AMERICAN SOIL.

Barack Obama buys AMERICAN STUFF. He owns a FORD, a BASEBALL TEAM, and a COMPUTER HE BUILT HIMSELF FROM AMERICAN PARTS. He travels mostly by FORKLIFT powered by biofuels made from IOWA CORN and genuine AMERICAN PATRIOTISM.

Barack Obama says that Americans cling to GUNS and RELIGION because they are AWESOME

224. Funny?
Hmm. This is either a really funny commentary on what it would take to convince neocons to vote for Obama. Or, it's cutting on him.

I took it as the former and got a good laugh. Even if it also made me cry that many Americans would need for that stuff to be true to vote for such a great candidate!

221. DONE. ..... Okay this Edwards media saturation on his affair ....... finally ......
pushed me over the top and I sent this assignment out today. Not into 'tabloid' politics and avoid it like the plague but hey ... DID YOU KNOW? John McCain came back from Vietnam and cheated on his disabled wife before leaving her and his three children and marrying a rich heiress 17 years his junior. McCain obtained a marriage license for his second marriage while he was still married to his first wife. ..... covered my response to all this perfectly. Thanks :)

226. Need help in bringing republicans to democratic side.
Can people write some messages to help bring republicans to Obama's side. They must be well reasoned, logical, and genuine undeniable truth, no hate words, and they must be less than under 200 characters. Im open to all suggestions and messages. Thank you.

227. New Strategy
I believe we should employ a new strategy to win over independents and on-the-fence republicans. How often do you believe an avid supporter of someone on the other side of the fence? How often do independents take politically involved activists seriously? Not often. I think if we stormed the political forums as innocent "fellow independent" just spreading links to unbiased media such as FactCheck.org, we could educate the independents with the truth. Sure, they might see a stretched truth from an Obama ad here and there, but the lies from McCain-Palin on FactCheck.org beat out Obama 10:1! So in this election, an educated independent will be an Obama Democrat, hands down! The good news is, WE don't have to spin the truth to make our side look good! We just have to spread it!

This will only work if it is done in a way that it is known to the independent that this IS the truth, and not just another activist pushing their own view with their own sources of spun media. This will ONLY work if we use references such as FactCheck.org or PBS.org, not MSNBC or other corporate media. Please make sure your check your OWN facts on a site like this before posting (especially if you go about it in this new way).

228. A New Strategy that will get votes
I believe we should employ a new strategy to win over independents and on-the-fence republicans. How often do you believe an avid supporter of someone on the other side of the fence? How often do independents take politically-involved activists seriously? Not often. I think if we swamped the political forums as "fellow independent" just spreading links to unbiased media such as FactCheck.org, we could educate the independents with the truth. Sure, they might see a stretched truth from an Obama ad here and there, but the lies from McCain-Palin on FactCheck.org beat out Obama 10:1! The good news is, WE don't have to spin the truth to make our side look good! We just have to spread it!

This will only work if it is done in a way that it is known to the independent (and anyone reading that post) that the information contained within IS the truth and the links are to unbiased sources that state fact, and not just another activist pushing their own view with their own sources of spun media. This will ONLY work if we use references such as FactCheck.org or PBS.org, not MSNBC, other corporate media, or much worse. And please make sure you check your OWN facts on a site like this before posting (especially if you go about it with a strategy like this).
