News from USW: Ohio Steelworkers Visit New York Financial Firms; Striking Union Members Carry Grievances to Investors, Consultants
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 28, 2005--The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that members of USW Locals 5724 and 5760 on strike against unfair labor practices at Ormet Corporation in Hannibal, Ohio and USW Local 14340 at Cognis in Cincinnati are visiting the Manhattan offices of five financial firms doing business with their employers today and tomorrow. The union members also plan to visit some of the firms' principals at their homes and apartments in the New York City area.
The Union said that these workers are spreading the word about their renegade employers who have resorted to illegal actions in order to force unfair contract demands on its members.
"These corporate fat-cats need to understand how their reckless business decisions are affecting our families and communities here in Ohio," said USW District 1 Director David McCall. "Every penny that goes into their coffers is taking a piece out of somebody's life 500 miles away."
About 1,200 members of USW Locals 5724 and 5760 have been on strike since November 22, 2004 at Ormet's aluminum reduction and rolling facilities in Hannibal, OH. About 270 members of USW Local 14340 have been on strike since February at a Cincinnati facility owned by Cognis, a chemical company based in Germany. <snip>
