Catholic DU'ers, please join me in moving the Church!
Any Catholics in our group?

I am going to every Catholic church in my area (to start with) and going to
confession.

I wish to confess my responsibility for the deaths of innocents in Iraq by
allowing our bush admin to conduct an injust war. And for the lives of our
service members who risk and lose their lives for us, in this war sent for no
good reason. This is a sin of omission, by not holding our govt acccountable.

OK it's been like 30 years since I confessed. Do I still have to tell him that?  :)

Too bad the evangelicals don't have confession! I would love to talk with
those pastors one at a time!  Anyone know how to reach out to those
community leaders, the pastors, churchmembers? Their intentions are good,
they just don't know some salient info!

On a more practical note, in the book "Organizing for Social Change" there is
a chapter on working with religious organizations that I would be happy to
copy and mail to anyone in this group who can do some outreach to the
religious community in Hawaii. With any luck the book is in your library. or I
can tell you  it's a great addition to your lobrary. Author Kim Bobo ,  midwest
academy manual for activists.

With aloha

1. I heard a "fundie" Catholic on their radio program
say the Pope's anti-war views were just his "opinion." He wasn't speaking Ex Cathedra (sp?) so it wasn't necessary to abide by what he said. This dude was a high ranking military man and that was how he justified his participating in the Iraq war.
The "right" is sooo good at twisting words when they don't want to accept their meaning and yet they accuse "liberal" Catholics of being of the "cafeteria" variety. More rotten hypocrites!

2. Wonder if they think he's speaking Ex Cathedra about abortion?
How about the death penalty? These fundies like to pick and choose, just like with Bible verses.

6. He doesn't have to speak ex cathedra about abortion because

abortion is covered quite thoroughly in the Church's catechism.

4. I don't think he was twisting words to say

the pope wasn't speaking ex cathedra; John Paul II didn't speak ex cathedra on war, but the pope's opinion that invading Iraq was not a just war should count for a lot with Catholics. It's not as if he had just told us what his favorite flavor of ice cream is.

On the other hand, the Catholic Church would lose a huge number of members if all the "cafeteria Catholics" left. Anyone who doesn't accept the Church's teaching on contraception is a "cafeteria Catholic" and you can look at the size of Catholic families since about 1970 to see how many don't accept that teaching. This is true of politically conservative Catholics as well as liberal ones.

5. Hmmm.....I am committed to change, and to making my efforts count.
I will do everything I can to bring them to understand Christ's teaching are at serious variance with our current actions.
Conflict is necessary sometimes, but you get more flies with honey...I am leafletting the parking lots with loving Christian informtation to move them our way. Not too sure smashmouth would work for me personally, but hey whatever you feel would work to bring them our way....

8. I Quit The Church
I wonder how many others did, because of this election and the fact that once again, they failed to state the truth.

I don't expect them to endorse one candidate or the other, but these bishops doing the abortion thing on Kerry....or anybody doing that for any politician, they should have said loud and clear that they were endorsing no candidate and that either one was up to the individual voter....they blew it...it made me sick.

Where were all the Catholics during the "Join Arnold" campagin...another pro-choice pol who goes to communion. The whole thing sucked...but good luck to those staying & fighting for the Church to do the right thing.
