10. California wines
The traditional white is chardonnay, and the traditional red is cabernet sauvignon. Louis Martini makes good reds.

3. Yellowtail
I like Australian Yellowtail black label Shiraz or red label Cabernet Sauvignon, also Mouton Cadet merlot is always good.

4. If you want red,
go for a Shiraz-Cabernet blend from Australia (Penfolds is a good choice). About $8 and every bit as good as a $30 bottle of Napa red.

enjoy! :toast:

16. I love that Penfolds wine-but here it's about $12-$14
and you're right-it's as good as the $30 bottle from Cali.

5. I am going to be verbally smacked by someone chiming in to say it's not a
wine, but I adore Spatlase... It's pretty inexpensive. I guess you would say it's like a white wine, since I've been told it's not a wine. :hi:

6. If red
Try Allure by Rabbit Ridge. Beverages and More stocks it. It's an excellent red for under $10. It isn't a varietal but a blend of various reds, hence the name, but Rabbit Ridge is a good winery, and the wine is delish!

18. "Saint -Hilaire"
"France's oldest sparkling wine," made just over the fence from the champagne district. Has been produced by a group of Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire for over 450 years. That's more than 100 years before the first champagne was created. Because it's classified as a sparkling wine, not a champagne it's 1/4 the price. For a little over 10 bucks, you get something comparable to a 40 dollar bottle of champagne. And it's kind of ironic to drink the most decadent beverage produced by a bunch of guys who've taken a vow of poverty.

13. My (cheap) favorites
Edited on Sat Apr-10-04 12:27 PM by HFishbine
These are my regular grocery store wines.

Fetzer Sundial Chardonay (crisp, not too sweet)
Gabbiano Chianti (my fav - great with Italian food and steak)
Louis Jadot Beaujolais (full-bodied, hearty finish -- great with a cigar or other smokey inhalants)

14. I'm fond of dry Italian whites....
Opici has an excellent white in a very cool fish-shaped bottle...

Alto Adige is a terrific wine, mentioned by poets since Catullus...

Cavit is a very good Pinot Grigio...as does Fontana. I'm also fond of Fontana Orvieto.

15. French and Italian wines
I like California wines also BUT as far as value goes, European wines are usually cheaper and more consistent. For some reason, California wines are jacked up in price in the US. Some good wines:

From France, I stick to white Burgundies, and red Cotes du Rhones. You can usually get a decent wine for under $15.

From Italy, I like Pinot Grigio (crisp white) or Sangiovese (full-bodied reds). Again, you can get a great bottle for under $15.

Also, I like Shiraz from Australia, but they have gone up in price recently.

17. The only way to learn about wine is to drink a lot of wine.
So get busy. If you have a month, that should be enough time to try a variety of wines and find a few you like.

21. Lots of good cheap wines out there
I like Yellow Tail chardonnay and its cheap enough to buy a case at a time. Jacob's Creek is also good. Fetzer makes several good varieties and they are usually inexpensive. I have a bottle of Alice White Shiraz and some Rosemont Shiraz now, like them both.

My wine budget is really limited, so I usually go to World Market and buy whats on sale. Good way to try new kinds.

I don't care for the Rieslings. Too sweet.

22. Any of the 2000 Bordeaux wines are excellent. You can pick
up a good bottle for $20

Madfish Shiraz is also very tasty at around $16 a pop.

Chalkhill Chardonnay is a bit more pricey, but not too bad , $30-$40 a bottle and is fantastic with seafood.

Also the Coppola's make nice wine that are fairly easy on the wallet.
