Mom With 14 Kids, One on the Way, Honored
Apparently, you get a prize for not using birth control in Arkansas:

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - With her 14 children in tow and pregnant with her 15th, Michelle Duggar waddled into Arkansas' Capitol on Wednesday to accept the state's Young Mother award.

"We're going from diapers right up to driver's ed," she said with a smile.

(snip)

"We were using birth-control pills," Jim Bob Duggar said. "Then we ended up giving this area of our life to God."

Duggar said the family stopped the birth control when it came to their understanding that the pills could cause a woman to miscarry.

47. OK, I'll say it.
Unless you have a farm to run and ten of your other children are disabled, this is a totally irresponsible decision. How the hell does one care for 14 kids?

Not to mention that if everyone did this, we'd have a world population of about 14 trillion in 100 years.

This woman is fucking crazy and should be locked in a mental institution, not given a medal.

How can she raise 14 kids?

How can she give them all individual attention.

She thinks she's birthing them out for god. THAT RIGHT THERE, should get her a one-way-ticket to the looney bin.

45. choice is choice....this is a psychological problem
This is like those religious nuts who don't get their kids vaccinated because they think God will heal their kids.

It's criminal and so is having 14 kids because you think God wants you to.

She'll probably have 14 more if she could.

It's just wrong. And something is definatly not right with this woman.

49. I would like to know how healthy the last few kids are...
Do any of them have Downs? It appears she is having a kid a year and that is TOUGH on a body. The older one gets the more likely it is to have a baby with Downs.

Also, just because a family can afford 14 kids does not mean it is a wise decision. ONE American uses more resources than a family of comparable size in the "third world", but yet many Americans bemoan the number of children born in "third world" countries. What would people celebrating her "choice" to birth 14 children say if she and her husband were not so well situated financially? OH I know what many would say behind closed doors.

I come from a family of seven kids and think it was incredibly irresponsible of my parents to bring so many kids into this world (in a ten year period my mom had seven kids). I am not proud of that fact. I have never wanted kids because I felt my mom had too many. She could not give us individual attention and expected the older ones to help with the younger ones whether they wanted to or not. It's not fair to the older ones to be expected to be parents to younger siblings. FYI: I am the youngest girl.

My uncle told me that my mom was so overwhelmed with kids by the time I was born that she rarely held me to feed me and I was left in my crib a lot of the time. Growing up I could not WAIT to be away from all those PEOPLE and be alone.

18. that is hardly fair
saying he thinks this woman belongs in one, is not the same as saying that anyone who thinks "differently than people here" belong in one. That is a strawman arguement, first of all, and second there is no lock-step "proper" thinking being enforced here

it's pretty much impossible to put quality time-hell, ANY kind of time, into each of those children individually in that situation. I use to work with a woman who had 13 siblings, and she was one of the most poorly adjusted human beings I've ever known! She was abusive to her own kids, her marriage was a mess, she would actually snatch food away from people when she was hungry (she said it was "everyone for themselves" at her dinner table; kids acting like wolves, or else they might not get anything to eat!) she couldn't hold down a job, and to top it all off, she's a Rush Limbaugh dittohead Freeper!Granted, she came from a lower middle class Catholic family that didn't have the finacial resources (or time) for a family of that size.

Someone should send that woman a case of condoms.

31. Irresponsible??
I am the youngest of thirteen children. My parents were Roman Catholic and didn't believe in birth control. We never received any assistance from the government or anybody else. While I do agree that people should not have more children than they can afford to support, it is ridiculous to assume that anyone with that many kids is irresponsible. My parents were incredible people and it was their right to have that many children despite what you might think. I would never choose to have that many children but I don't look down on those who decide to.

Big family gets a lot of Christmas love after loss

If Charles Dickens' masterpiece "A Christmas Carol" had been re-written for the modern era, it might read something like this.

A dozen county representatives from the department of social services, the sheriff's department and the fire department visited the 15-child Dorsey household in Marlton on Christmas Eve to donate toys and food. Daphne Dorsey, mother of the family, was widowed in June 2002 when her husband Jonathan Sr. died at 37 from complications suffered after a liver transplant.

As the family struggles to make ends meet, county leaders stepped in to make sure that the spirit of Christmas wasn't lost. "This is an exciting day for Prince George's. We believe in giving and sharing, and people in the administration all chipped in to make this Christmas special," said James Dula, deputy chief administrative officer for the county Department of Health and Human Services.

Dula, playing the role of Santa, spent the afternoon giving gifts to the children, who beamed with delight. The Dorsey clan unwrapped some of their gifts and found dolls, action figures, books, a LEGO set, bicycles, and a basketball. The items and food were donated from a variety of county and private sources, and cries of "thank you" bounced around the house.
