1. If I remember right, you're pretty young.
I understand why you feel the way you do. Just be prepared that some people are going to think you're cheering for/wishing for your brother to get killed. Remind them, if need be, that you're 14 or 15 years old and still in the throes of all that sibling rivalry-teenage hormone insanity stuff, okay?

I'm happy for you and sad for him, simultaneously. :-)

9. Maybe. Maybe not.
Sometimes death is a liberating thing for the survivors, and that's okay.

6. Buy a book called "Liberating Losses."
It was written by two women. One of them told her abusive husband that she wanted a divorce. He was killed in a car wreck the next day. The other one watched her husband waste away slowly for years. In both cases, they were relieved about the deaths. People condemned them for it. They wrote the book to tell other bereaved people who feel liberated by the "loss" that it's okay. No one can feel your feelings or tell you that they're good or bad or right or wrong.

I read it after a friend finally succeeded in drinking himself to death. I had accepted long ago that he was never going to stop drinking until he was dead. I was very glad when I got the phone call. I had watched his slow suicide for many years, and his death took a weight off my shoulders. I honored my memories of the good times, but was quite honest about the bad times -- the drunken phone calls, the middle-of-the-night bail bondsman calls, etc. The bad times were horrible, and he did not want to stop drinking. He made no effort to save himself, and I'm glad that he finally succeeded in drinking himself to death.

Many people called me heartless. That book really helped me.

If your brother dies, and you find it a liberating thing, you're entitled to your feelings.

I was mostly warning you that some people won't cut you the slack I do. That's all.

10. Keep your heart open
Presuming that your brother makes it through his enlistment in one piece, he will be a different person. So will you. Keep your heart open to the possibility of change and grace.

Life is too short to spend energy on hating siblings.

12. Agreed.
I'm 25, and I'm a wholly different person than I was at 14, 18, or even 22. 14-28 (or so) are prime growth-and-change years. They may be friends ten years from today.

21. You will cry for him.....eventually
You may be unable to feel for him now, but you will feel someday.

The alternative is that you become so hardened and unfeeling that you become more of a monster than he ever was.
Trust me, I have experience in this area.

8. That's tough
My brother was 11 years older than me when I was in primary school. Never had any problems. In fact, he could be my double, personality and all that. Sounds like you and your brother are polar opposites.

Well, I hope this phase of his life has a positive impact on him. For your sake.

7. I don't get it
I can understand frustration with a sibling, but is this really the time to be looking forward to your brother's joining into the armed forces? Watched any TV news the last 3 days? In the context of all that, with your brother in harms way, your sibling rivalries and squabbles will quickly drift into obscurity.

25. the kid's confused, man
He's getting coddled on one end of the thread and ass whooped on the other.
A cool-headed adult needs to intervene (you and I are out, at this point) and explain that mixed up emotions are ok, but fratricide aint cool.
