3. The key is gas mileage

My current car has nearly 200,000 miles on it, is a 4 door sedan with a full trunk, and still gets 32 mpg - and that's going up and down hills 100 miles each day. Cost me less than 2K used. What is it? A 1990 Geo Prizm. A good compromise for those who don't have much money to spend.

5. Depends on the use

The Smart is a good inner-city car. It can park front to the sidewalk, and is very manouverable. However, the short wheel-distance make it an awkward affair at higher speeds, and the whole car has a "Design-first-fit-the-tech-in-later" feel to it.
I don't know how it would perform on American highways, but it is no car for the Autobahn.

For a small car with great mileage, have a look at the VW Lupo.

I would drive the first one. Only if no one else was on the road.....EVER.
I used to have a 60 minute commute from South Jersey into Northeast Philly every morning and I've seen BIG cars run over and squashed by trucks, more than a few times.
While I refuse to drive an SUV, I'll keep my 'regular' sized car, thank you.

11. I drove one for a while....

I liked it....although not very comfortable over long distance because of its short wheel base. However, it gets about 60 mpg....goes 135 km/h tops or about 85 mph and had a 3 cyclinder turbo engine.

The car is actually safer than the Opel Corsa (similar to the Geo Metro or Suzuki Swift) and VW Lupo. The car is very quick off the start too and of course great for parking.

It has a tiptronic shifter but I was kept it in the "automatic" mode.
