I made cornbread today to make dressing for tomorrow.
Getting close to that family time of the Thanksgiving Day Parade, a big meal, a feisty family political debate and sleeping through a Detroit Lions game.

2. YUM!
Enjoy! The cornbread dressing is the BEST part of the whole meal.

We're all going out to eat, just not the same since my Dad passed a year and a half ago. He was the big Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner-cooking guy. We probably won't argue over dinner, never did. My husband is the only Republican and he's outnumbered. I will once again miss talking politics privately with my Dad though. Damn good cook and even better liberal.

21. Second that. I miss my Mom & Dad, too. I miss my mother-in-law just as much.
But there were many years to be really THANKful for. I feel really grateful that I had them in my life, and that my mother-in-law bore and raised my husband to be such a great person.

5. I'm heading out for buttermilk and cornmeal right now!
I use cornbread, sausage, dried cherries, pecans, onions and celery, beaten eggs, sage and thyme, moistened with a little stock and milk (and a little duck fat if it's not cooked inside the bird). Time to go to the grocery store!

17. Have a great day tomorrow any how.
I love DU and sometimes it's good to get away from the negative political stuff. President Barack Hussein Obama did pardon a turkey today.

12. This is the first time in years I won't be making the cornbread tonight
I still use an old receipt that my grandmother jotted down on a card for me 35 years ago. Just plain simple cornbread. I don't know about you, but I mix my cornbread about half and half with toasted (more dried than toasted actually) whole wheat bread as the base for my stuffing.

I used to love this week more than any other. Now, not so much. Still, it is a wonderful thing.

16. I think I see Jesus on that corn bread.
Or maybe it's the face of a polar bear. I'm not sure. Happy Thanksgiving!

18. I thought it looked like an angel. Though angels have nothing to do with Thanksgiving.
There are two holes where I checked whether it was done. They look like eyes.

19. Neither do Jesus and polar bears.
I figured those were either test holes or poppy seeds, and I've never heard of poppy seeds in cornbread.

I have to get mashed potatoes for 23 people to it's destination 20 miles away, if anybody's got any good ideas on how to get them there hot,I'd love to hear them. We're right now thinking of wrapping the pot of potatoes up in blankets and hope they're still hot when we get there.

26. A big cooler and some beach towels might do the trick.
I'm cooking make-ahead mashed potatoes for tomorrow. They've got cream cheese and sour cream in them. I'll have an oven to warm them up in, though. Hey, would a crock pot work for your potatoes?
