Getaway to the Mountains or Ocean?
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 11:47 AM by GoddessOfGuinness
We've decided to take a long weekend with the kids and my Mom in early November.

We're torn between the Peaks of Otter in VA and Rehoboth Beach in DE.

Rehoboth has the advantage of being more appealing to my 16 year old since there's a TV in the room. And one of the country's best microbreweries is within walking distance of the hotel; so my husband and I can get a little tipsy while Grandma hangs out with the kids. (It's our 15th anniversary) The beach is also one of my favorite spots in the off-season...particularly Rehoboth, because the residents are so cool.

The disadvantages are the cold water temps, which would especially be a turn-off to my 5 year old, and the fact that it would cost twice as much to stay there as it would in the mountains.

Peaks of Otter offers inexpensive clean rooms with no TV or phone. It's gorgeous country with a variety of hiking trails nearby. There are also a number of museums and caves not far from there in case the weather is a total washout (though a little rain doesn't stop us from a good hike). Dining/entertainment prospects are probably limited, though we can always bring our own beer. It's twice as far to drive there, and has the misfortune of being in the middle of Freeperville, with confederate flags to be found on many a pole.

Where would you choose to go?

6. Thanks! That's another place I'd like to visit...
But it's definitely too far for just a weekend.

5. Provincetown MA
A very cozy town on the tip of Cape Cod known as an artists getaway, with quaint shops and wonderful B&B's and tons and tons of Gay people.

7. Well since you live somewhere in the Mid Atlantic region
I suggest the Outer Banks. Altough both The Peaks and Rehoboth are both great places. I am mid Atlantic too.

8. Are accomodations less expensive there?
What about local dining and entertainment in the off-season?

9. Yep off season they are
local little sea food places. That is about it too. Lots of peace and quiet. I usually just sit and watch the ocean and contemplate life

10. L-o-o-o-o--v-e
the Outer Banks. Rates decrease after Labor Day. Mostly (very friendly) locals in the off season. Seafood shops are open for food. My suggestion rent a house on the beach. We were drinking wine, watching a spectacular view of the Big Pond on a crystal clear night, with the lights off, and only a few candles burning.. next thing I know, her head is in my lap, and she's not sleeping (if you know what I mean). Yessir, l-o-o-o-o-v-e them Outer Banks
