1. Bob, happy little trees RULE!!!
Bob was the best.
I liked it when he got excited when he cleaned his brush.

6. "You simply dip your brush in the good ole odorless thinner here,
shake off the excess, and then just, heh, beat the devil out of it, ha-ha"

Thomas Kinkaide is a hack who got rich painting freeper-friendly fantasies.

32. I STILL clean my brushes that way!
It really, really works!

Kincaid is a hack. "Painter of Light<tm>" my ass! He has illegal aliens doing all the painting then he steps in for 1/2 a dozen "highlights" and the signature. He "paints" something like 100 pix a day that way...

He'd spend 20 minutes painting this beautiful background with mountains and a lake and then BAM!!! he'd throw a tree right in the middle of it all. You'd be pissed until he was done and saw that the tree was perfect there.

9. not to mention mall rats and QVC shoppers
Ever see that 60 Minutes piece on how fast he cranks out his paintings (mostly done by apprentices, but finished and signed by the 'master.'

He used to be a serious painter, though, before becoming 'master of light'

barf

Still, there's room for all kinds of art I reckon.

19. Very VERY disturbing stuff
It was so perniciously hypnotic.

When I watch cooking shows or home improvement shows, at least somewhere in the back of my mind--far back to be sure--there was some part that thought I might try what I was watching. I might really cook that someday, or that guy makes reinforcing the cellar against earthquakes so easy I might just give it a try myself ...

But those Bob Ross shows. Man, what was it with them? There was no way, no how, I would ever pick up a canvas and brush and try to do any of that stuff. But there I'd be, a half hour later, rubbing my eyes, wondering what I had been doing for the past half hour, echoes of "happy clouds" and "happy trees" still whispering in my ears.

I always found this disturbing.

21. Oh, Christ, that's a brainless question: Bob Ross
Kinkade is an industry lacking art.

Bob Ross painted fluffy stuff, but he painted fluffy stuff because he was painting stuff that would be easier for other people to paint: for him, it wasn't so much the end product as it was his desire to bring painting, and the relaxation and creative spirit of it, to people who wouldn't otherwise have ever taken up brush.

That's artistry at a high level right there.

Kinkade and his faux-Christian-hyperbole pedantic ignorant lack of artistic talent can kiss my starving artist ass. (though I don't deny that Kinkade has two good skills: one, the skill of the dupe and the con, and second, he really does have an incredible mastery of his brush and use of color - I can't deny that at all - it's just too bad he uses to sucker people into buying his shlock).

Bob Ross was a great guy, an incredibly nice person who simply wanted to bring people to do their own paintings, and he was a military vet. :-)

is the epitomy of WaL Mart art. His painting are seriously over priced but the images are everywhere. Wouldn't be surprised if he came out with a line of Thomas Kinkaid Douche Bags. Pretty little waterfall, babbling brook, a light in the window. Blech.

But every home comes with it's own original Kinkade! I remember reading the sales literature last year, the year before, sometime in hell, and being appaled and disgusted.

There is a Kinkaid subdivision not far from where we live so one Sunday we went to see it.

The houses are pretty typical subdivision houses with a bit more frou-frou than usual. But the interiors of the model homes are chock full of Kinkaid art, furniture and gobbledygook. Sappy and saccharine beyond belief. Expensive, too.

I could never live in a place like that.

But on the other hand, it would be fun to buy one of those, and then deface all the art and paint the cottage black and just, in general, be very kind and friendly and a good neighbor, but artistically "offensive".

48. haha you read my mind
I'd actually paint the house white, but splatter obnoxiously bright neon paint colors on it.

Kinda like a Jackson Pollack house outside, and I'd buy Andy Warhol screen prints... picasso prints, matisse prints, alfred stieglitz photos, jerry uelsmann photos... etc.

I'd use the thomas kinkade prints for the paper and collage or paint over them, then give them to my yuppie neighbors as presents.

But that's just me. You can tell I invested wayyyy too much thought into this Kinkadia thing.

49. If we could get funding, like an NEA grant or something,
and buy one of those houses in order that our ART will be turning that schlock crap INTO art, oh, that would be totally awesome! Then invite the neighbors over.

"Yes, I call this 'Cottage in Pink with Lilac Bushes and Hyacinth, Covered With Urine', what do you think of it? Fitting, isn't it? Or perhaps you'd prefer Maggie's 'Phallic Summer Lighthouse On the Bay In Thunderstorm About To Be Swallowed By Uterus?' Anyway, the blood on the floor is a Christic symbol of Kinkade's sacrifice of artistic integrity in order to build a corporatized faux-religious empire, reminiscent of our fascist faux-Christian dictatorship under Shrub. Pretty cool, huh?"
