Apparently, they're lighter than dogs so they don't set off mines if they do step on them, and people don't get as attached to rats so it's less of a problem if they get blown up (although really, any cute wee beastie that keeps me from stepping on a bomb is damned attachment-worthy in my book)...

There have also been projects to train them to sniff out TB in mucus samples, which they can apparently do cheaper and more effectively than the available tools. The more I see about them, the more I want one as a pet - except that it would probably give my cat a heart attack...
