Man uses fake $100 bill to make change from church offering plate

EVANSVILLE — As ushers at St. Benedict's Cathedral were taking offering plates back to be totaled Sunday, a man stopped one of them and asked a favor.

"He said, 'I'd like to make a donation, but all I have is a $100 bill,'" said Julie Ann Walker, business manager at the church at 1328 Lincoln Avenue.

The man gave the ushers a $100 bill, they gave him $80 in change. Church officials didn't realize the $100 bill was counterfeit until later.

"It's just hard to imagine someone doing that to the church," Walker said
