Syfy cancels "Eureka" - no 6th season
Well, there goes pretty much my only reason for watching Syfy. Sometimes I can stand Warehouse 13, so long as Claudia isn't featured too much; I like the W13 concept and the writers aren't exaggerating the Pete and Myka dialogue the way they did for a while, but it still tends to have really lame-o conclusions and special effects. Alphas just really sucks and it damn near unwatchable. Sigh. Where are Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov (not to mention Gene Roddenberry) when you need them? I'd think one of them would have figured out how to communicate from the other side. :D (Realizing they may not want to ...)

Whoa! Big shock on Eureka.

Remember how Syfy ordered six episodes for a potential final season last week? Well, tonight the network decided that not only is the series firmly going to end, but those final six episodes are not going to happen after all.

The 13-episode fifth season that was ordered last year, which includes a holiday special, is going to be the final season of Eureka.

Here’s a statement from Syfy:

“After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.“

Last week a Syfy executive and said he was “hopeful” the drama series about a town of geniuses would continue beyond an additional six episodes, but I guess the deal didn’t come together as parties expected. At least Eureka ran for a healthy five seasons and this move still gives producers time to wrap up the show in a creatively satisfying way. (I know, it’s like the TV series equivalent of saying, “At least he didn’t suffer,” but it’s still true!)

1. Yep, Will Wheaton just posted that on Google+
Needless to say there is a furor. And rightfully so - that was one of the few shows I could enjoy watching with my daughter.. I sure as hell ain't watching Game Of Thrones and True Blood with her!

Money fucks up shit.

Not that I don't want some but fuck, I really liked that show.

2. did Wil Wheaton post that?
or did you?

I knew WW had a sense of humor - especially about Wesley's "insufferability" - but that comment just cracks me up. Maybe because I misread it as "Monkey fucks up shit" :D

4. lol, no Will was a bit more gentlemanly in his posting
I, however, tend to swear when I'm pissed.

And when I'm not.

And monkeys fuck up shit too - they fucking throw it! That's fucked up!

7. SciFi has screwed up more shows over the year
than any other network. I'm sure ComCast had a lot to do with this, as SciFi is owned by Universal/NBC/etc. They claim to be the SF&F channel, but they're fill of shit.

12. Ever since they "re-branded" themselves,
it has no longer been about being a strictly science fiction channel. In fact, many channels are doing this and have been for years. They keep the name-recognition while dumping everything that made it the channel of that name (for example, "The Learning Channel".)

Best to just dump siffie and either move over to BBCA, or Netflix.

14. That's true.
But when they did the re-brand, they said it in the clear, that they wanted to "get away from science fiction" :eyes:

3. Five seasons is a decent run for any TV show.
Given the SyFy channel's programming history, I was surprised that there was a season 2 for Eureka, and I liked it.

5. I gaven't been able to watch it lately
And I have to catch up. But Colin Ferguson said, awhile back, that it wasn't going to go past a third or fourth season orginially, but it proved popular enough to be renewed at that time. I kinda missed having Ed Quinn, because Nathan Stark was so delicious, but Colin Ferguson and Joe Morton are still cool. Hopefully, they will wrap it up properly.

9. The good sci fi is over on BBC America
... is BBC America trying to compete with Syfy to become the geek network of choice?

According to Perry Simon, general manager of BBC America, it’s just a matter of focusing on what they do well. “Science fiction is a staple of British television -- there’s rich history of it, and they do it very well. As a result, BBCA has gotten a steady pipeline of quality British science fiction, and we have over the years wanted to deliver it in coherent fashion, which led us to brand 'Supernatural Saturday.'"

"Eureka." :(
