My cat doesn't meow. Anyone have a cat like that?
I have 3 other cats that do so she's heard lots of meows. She "prrrps" and it sounds guttural, however it's not very often she does that. She got locked in a room recently and It was a long time before I realized she was there. I felt so bad for her. I rescued her at 8 weeks and she's about 6 to 7 months old. How do you get a cat to meow?

1. What a sweetie! Not sure how to teach meowing other than to just do it at her a lot, like you're
talking with her. But even then it might not work. Some kittehs are just not the vocal sort.

6. Set a bird feeder up right outside a window. That will get her making chirping mews at least.

31. That worked for me with a rescue cat
who had lived outside for a long time. Apparently cats don't meow much, if at all, at each other - it's a form of communications directed specifically to their human staff. Anyway, Max didn't meow at all after I adopted him. He'd purr, chirp, and do that half "mrrrrr" thing but he didn't meow. I started meowing at him, and a few weeks later he was meowing at me regularly.

And the OP's kitty is adorable!! :loveya:

3. One of mine doesn't meow.
Edited on Tue Jul-26-11 09:22 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
She's quite vocal -- she chirps, murmurs, squeaks, and trills, but she doesn't meow. If she is extremely irate or unhappy about something (such as, if I accidentally step on her tail), she goes "YAAAAH!!" If she's hungry she'll squeak more loudly. But I don't think I've ever heard her really meow in the two years I've had her. I adopted her as a kitten from some friends who live on a farm; she and her mother and sister were farm cats, and maybe she never learned to meow.

I guess some of them just don't do it.

Your kitty is really cute. :loveya:

4. My cat never meows.
He makes the occasional trilling sound, but that's rare too. He doesn't purr either. Despite all this, he's the friendliest and most affectionate cat you could ever meet. He's just quiet. :)

8. One of mine rarely meows
Occasionally, when I'm getting ready to feed her, she'll let out a meow. Other than that, she doesn't meow. If she gets locked in a room, she just waits until someone comes into the room so she can leave. I don't think there's a way to get a cat to meow.

9. My Goodness....She is Gorgeous!!!
Such a sweet little face...

As for meowing...there are days when I wish mine didn't...I have two talkers...one will greet me telling me all the horrid things the other one did to him while I was out, or will just walk up to me and start spewing about something. The other one meows, cries, whimper, chirps, and nibbles on my leg for food, or for me to clean the litterbox, or just aggravate me. I love them dearly, but there are days when I would love silence.

Oh..she is so cute!!!!

13. That looks like a Maine Coon and they chirp, trill and sometimes meow
As the owner of one for almost 20 years, they have different sounds from ordinary cats. Then again, they are far from ordinary.
Mine is almost like a dog...very affectionate, initiating play, and coming when called by name!

I remember when she was much younger and in heat, she sounded like she was saying "Oh Momma" over and over again! I never bred her which I now regret.

She was a stray and I had never heard of the breed. Because she was on the streets for so long, her growth was stunted and her top weight was 8 lbs which is unusual for the breed. They are generally very large cats.

I don't think mine has ever made the "meow" sound, but I googled it and learned they sometimes do. She lets me know exactly what she wants just the same. You will just have to learn HER language.

Wonderful cats and excellent companions.

My little old lady is almost at the end now and I just try to keep her comfortable.
Best pet I have ever had in my life.

Your little friend is adorable!

32. After googling Maine Coon
she has these features:

Doesn't meow
Has a very long fluffy tail the same length as her body
Has tufts of hair coming out of her ears
Has very long legs and big paws.
Chirps very loudly at birds.
Has an "M" on her forehead

Poor little thing was found in the snow beside a highway with burnt whiskers and partially burnt ear. I love her so much!

38. Yep, I recognized her in an instant
Notice her very long whiskers also....

Oh, and she will retain that "kitten face", and they tend to live long.

I had never heard of them before, either. The vet confirmed mine is Maine Coon.

I was just happy to rescue a starving kitten at Christmas. Nobody ever claimed her....

14. What a great cat! Beautiful...
...and insanely-cute!

But, on topic, my cat meows when confronted by other cats, or when he's scared, like when I'm driving him to the vet.

Otherwise, his usual communications are a "silent meow," where his lips move, but no significant noise comes out. He also does a quiet, but audible, single-syllable "meh" or "ehh" kind of sound when he is asking for food or saying "hello."

He also purrs a lot, sometimes very loudly.

Here he is, in younger days, with his cheap, plastic, Chinese made 'Mercan flag:

18. Our cat has more of a squeak than a meow....
and she often gives us the silent meows, too...mouth opens, nothing comes out.

But she purrs like an engine, though.

20. Could be part Maine Coon. We have two Maine Coon mixes.
Neither one has ever meowed.

One squeaks very faintly. At his loudest he sounds like a rusty door hinge somewhere very far away.

The other one has a wide range of different chirps and trills and squeaks but no meow.

It's ok. It's just how they are. They make their feelings known without meowing.

26. I was wondering if maybe she's part Maine Coon
because now at 6/7 months old her tail is really really long. Much longer then any of my full grown cats and her legs are long as well.

33. She does have the look in some ways.
The hair is long and looks like it has that type of texture. And a very long tail is characteristic of the breed as well.

"At his loudest he sounds like a rusty door hinge somewhere very far away."

My sweetie Maine Coone Cat is gone now, but that exactly describes how he sounded even when he was TRYING to get my attention using sound. He was a huge kitty too.

I got him as a stray middle-aged adult cat, and getting to know him was a trip, I always got a kick out of how he would just stand silently at the door staring it at waiting for me to notice that he wished it would open so he could go outside. The longer I had him the more he tried to talk to me with sound. He was more like my pal than my cat.

That is one of the cutest kittehs I've ever seen. And I'm not just saying that 'cause she looks like one of my kittehs! :)

And yes, my youngest baby, Molly, doesn't meow. She does purr and she's super-affectionate, but no meowing. Actually, it's a nice change of pace from my other "big-mouthed" cats! :P

why she doesn't meow. She may get more vocal as she gets older. One of my cats mostly used to chirp and trill when he was younger. Now he seems to meow more and purrs louder too. She is a BEAUTIFUL KITTY though. :)

27. Maybe she does meow but at a pitch that humans can't easily hear?
We had a cat who 'mouthed' meows, but humans could generally not hear them. Also we had a lovely neighbour cat, who seemed not to meow, or at least not that we could hear, but was very happy and contented, and certainly did purr a lot, though not loudly.

You need to speak to her in her language. Then she'll talk. :)

She's a doll. Makes my heart squeeze just looking at that photo.

We have two part Maine Coons; one meows, the other one flat-out yowls and hollers and talks her fool head off. But the one who meows didn't purr for the first 9 months of her life, then it was like flipping a switch. She purrs now all the time.
