Why is at home winemaking considered artsy, beer making- crafty, but whiskey making
illegal and hick in nature?

Why is it that I cant distill some out in the woods somewhere for personal consumption and a little extra revenue?

It is in my blood, both of my grandfathers were distillers and bootleggers. My paternal grandfather knew half the guys who founded NASCAR and grew up running liquor through the night up in the Carolinas in hotrods.

1. Make wine then distill that! Or cider and distill it.
Then you're making brandy or calvados.

That's both artsy, crafty and a damn good thing.

Only better would be growing your own pot.

2. I had a friend in New Zealand who made whisky
where it was perfectly legal to make a few gallons each year for one's personal consumption. He used to bring a 2-liter bottle to CES every year with a "solvent" label on it. Better than a lot of whisky I've paid actual money for.

3. Can you distill it for your personal consumption if you don't seek extra revenue?
I don't think artsy crafty people can sell theirs, legally. But what do I know?
