Eye doctor puts drops in your eyes
dilates your pupils until you are half blind, then has you pick out a new pair of glasses while you can't see!
After trying on pair after pair in a blurry fog, I'm not sure what I ordered. I think I'm gonna end up looking like Dame Edna. Damn!

1. I just get the prescription and shop somewhere cheaper.
I think they rip you off in the dr's office for frames.

I don't think you will look like that picture, though! LOL

2. That's atropine in those drops.
Made from belladonna or deadly nightshade. Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant & tobacco are related to that.

It's called "belladonna" because in the Renaissance, women would put nightshade in their eyes to dilate their pupils, making them look more attractive. Belladonna literally means "beautiful woman" in Italian.

i've had those drops too, and they make my heart beat fast and make me nervous which is a normal reaction.

Want cheap glasses? Get a copy of your prescription including the Pupillary distance (PD), and order off the Internet. I've done it twice. I'm nearsighted and in bifocals and require high index.

Blog about cheap glasses: http://glassyeyes.blogspot.com

Good places to check out:
www.zennioptical.com
www.39dollarglasses.com
www.goggles4u.com

There are lots of places, just hit google for "cheap prescription glasses".

I have ordered from Zenni Optical and Goggles 4 U. This time, from goggles 4 U, I just got two pairs of bifocals with the D shaped inserts for $96.00 total. Ten bucks for frames, $38 for hi index bifocals. It was ten bucks more for progressive no lines. Got a ten percent off coupon from the blog mentioned above.

Two years ago I ordered from zenni and they were fine. This time it was Goggles 4 U.

Check em out!!

3. I just ordered a pair from Zenni Optical
Rimless bifocals

I took some of the frame measurements off my old pair.

The damn doctor refused to give me the pupillary distance as he said it belonged to HIM!

Lens Crafters did it for me for free and suggested I buy online to save money.

Very nice of them to do that for me!

4. The doctor HAS to give you your PD as part of your scrip, per state law.
He's an ass and probably being illegal.

I used to pay about $290 for a pair of glasses at Lenscrafters.

Now having TWO pairs of glasses is an unimaginable luxury, and eyeballs too!!

7. This is the south...nobody gives a crap about the law.
He refused to do it...and I asked him point blank to give it to me.

Oh, and he never did the test with eyedrops in the eyes, either and I was over 55.

On edit: File a complaint with the state optometrists' board about it, or at least ask them questions.

12. Tell him
you want a copy of your medical records as required by HIPAA. That should get his attention and get this settled.

That said, I've never had an optometrist or ophthalmologist do a PD -- it was always the optician.

9. Bullshit!
Your pd is not a part of the prescription.

And now that you bought those glasses online, who is going to adjust them? If they're not made correctly, who is going verify it and tell you what's wrong? When you lose a nose pad, who is going to replace it?

Stop being so fucking cheap. If you pay $290 for a pair of glasses and wear them for 2 years, you just spent less that $.50 a day. How much did you pay for that big screen tv? Doesn't do you any good if you can't see the fucking thing!

Sorry, angry rant from a certified optician who is sick of fixing other people's (i.e Lenscrafters, Walmart, etc) mistakes because the patient is too cheap to pay for a professional to properly fit their glasses.

10. No need to yell at me
I go to my (really great ) optician. Costs me a bloody fortune for the glasses, but they're always right. My lenses are very specialized with prisms, transition and blended optics, that it's worth every penny.

11. Sorry
Not really meaning to yell at anybody. I'm just tired of people wanting something for nothing.

Being an optician, at least a good one, is not an easy thing. It's part sales/customer service, part medical, part technical/scientific and part artisan all rolled into one. I've been doing this for going on 18 years and I still occasionally come across something I've never seen before.

I guess I just get tired of people using our services when something goes wrong and expecting not to pay for it, but want to buy their glasses somewhere else because they're cheaper. You get what you pay for. You want 2 pairs for $49, you get $49 worth of glasses and the lack of experience that goes with it. Don't go buy your glasses at Wallyworld then come to me to adjust them, or ask me to figure out why you can't see. Take them back to Wally, see if he can fix the problem. That's why you pay me more. I know what the hell I'm doing. And if I don't, I know where to look to find the answer and the experience to apply it.

Glad you've got a good optician. Prism is a tricky thing, especially if it's compound (not all in one direction), and even a lot of good opticians don't really get it, especially if you've never worked in the lab. Keep seeing him and he'll (or she'll) take good care of you.

17. Where are you getting off getting on my case?????
You have no idea what my income is or my financial situation. You assume I bought a big screen tv???

I haven't.

I'm perfectly happy with my $48 bifocals and if they little wire nose pieces with pads on the end are wrong, well I am smart enough to get a pair of needlenose pliers and adjust them. I can do this although I have a doctoral degree (in law), an associates degree and a bachelor's degree (in biology).

I don't have a job, I am too old and too educated, I don't have a pension and I don't have any Health Insurance.

I can't find a discount dentist for my dental work when I need several thousand dollars worth of repairs, like a small bridge, removal of a root canal, new fillings. I can't find a discount prescription store for my medications, when they want $300 a month for Spiriva, one of my asthma meds, and there is something like 12 micrograms (one millionth of a gram, not one thousandth of a gram) per daily dose??? I take several meds, some of which are not generic, and they are maintenance meds I'll have to take the rest of my life.

That's something like $13,000,000.00 a POUND for SPIRIVA. A POUND. Utterly ridiculous.

When it comes to glasses, I DO NOT GET WHAT I PAY FOR. I can economize and see perfectly well. Unfortunately, with our medical system and lack of universal health care, especially for those hoping to live to 65 so we can get medicare, there are few places we can get discount health care, unless we just stop getting those regular checkups for cancer and heart trouble and what not. I don't have any health insurance because with all the exclusions and co-pays, when you have prexisting conditions, I don't think it would save me very much money.

So get off your high horse about what a fabulously strenuous and difficult profession you are in. Find something to do that doesn't get you so bent out of shape.

16. What big screen TV? I purchased my TV in 1998
I don't even own a cell phone and I am unemployed.

I feel it is rude to call someone cheap when you don't know their circumstances.
