5. Oh God...bad war story follows...
When I was in truck driver training my trainer was a guy from New Orleans. One fine day he wanted to talk about how wonderful Al Copeland was, and he was shocked beyond belief I didn't know who Al Copeland was.

Al Copeland, in case you are as clueless as I was, started Popeye's Chicken.

Now let me ask you something: I was born and raised in Idaho. I spent two months in New Jersey, six months in Massachusetts, two years after that in Tennessee, a year in Korea, six months in central Texas, eight more months in western Texas, six years in Germany, two in upstate New York, and sixteen years in North Carolina. How, exactly, would I know who the fuck Al Copeland was?

6. Hey, you...
I, myself, was born and raised in Detroit, spent two months in Texas, two more months in Biloxi, MS, then back to Texas again for two more years, then off to Korea for 21 months, back in the States for seven and half years in DC and Northern Virginia, four years in Germany, nine years in Southeast Virginia and right now I'm back home in Southeast Michigan....

I don't know who the fuck is Al Copeland either.

I've seen a World Cup, a state fair and jet fuel explosion, and that don't beat all.

21. On the other hand...
you weren't dealing with a guy who seemed to take it as a personal insult that you don't know who Al Copeland is.

And that's the weird thing: We had a Popeye's Chicken stand in Fayettenam. I ate there. Once. It's shitty chicken, at least at that one store. Even if I KNEW who Al Copeland was, it wouldn't change the fact his chicken sucked.

Actually, that would be a much better story than who Stewart's dad really was. (One of the old guard at the CIA and a good friend of the Bush Crime Family :( )

Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 11:57 PM by GReedDiamond
...Google Bill's Chicken, Altadena, they do not seem to have an "official" web site.

For decades, they were located in various locations around the Lake Ave & Washington Blvd area of northwest Pasadena.

They do the best fried chicken but they're soul food too!

Also, Dinah's in Glendale.

A long time ago, there was Green's Soul Food in Hollywood, they were really great.

Edited for clarity.

19. Five Points Fried Chicken
But it's been closed for thirty five years. It was a little locally owned restaurant in the south part of Tallahassee that used to have all you could eat fried chicken once a week. That was the best fried chicken I ever got anywhere other than my mother's. Mom's fried chicken was good, but it was a completely different style of fried chicken - pan fried rather than deep fat fried.

It was so good that there was not a KFC in this town until Five Points closed.

23. Other-- local guys. Once was a woman out here who...
opened a fried fried fish and chicken joint on the bay next to the bar she owned.

Tiny hole in the wall with some tables outside and only open in the summer but had absolutely the best fried chicken and fish&chips you ever had. Cole slaw, potato salad... all the sides were fantastic, too.

Alas, one day she realized she had enough money and how much work it was to run the place, so she closed it down. A dark day that was.

Ain't no Bojangles up here any more, and the remaining little guys aren't so hot, so it's KFC unless we get a Popeye's. A good Popeye's, though-- corporate standards seem to be loose and the quality between stores varies too much.

I like fried chicken. Hard to go wrong - kind of like pizza - even the bad stuff is still good.

My homemade has a pretty good reputation.

We used to have this Broaster place in the little town nearby - they had some pretty good fried chicken, but went out of business for some reason. It's now a pretty decent hole in the wall Mexican place. In the little town the other direction there is a big truck stop/tourist store/gas station place that has a diner (hard to believe not a chain!) and they have delicious fried chicken - and fresh because it always takes forever to get it served. More of a "problem" is I think they use Cornish hens, as the pieces are tiny, but it sure tastes good.

On into the big city is a local Tucson chain, the Lucky Wishbone - good fried chicken, also Guaymas shrimp and steak fingers. :9

I have never tried Popeyes and have heard good things about it. Someday.

I like KFC original style.

The few times I have had Church's, it was too damn greasy - and that is saying a lot because I love greasy fried.

37. Popeye's, for flavor and quality control.
They cook the chicken fresh and have a VERY short window in which they need to sell it or throw it out.

Despite the "unhealthy" aspects of any fried food, their chicken strips are not "overly" greasy."

I don't load up on the fat-filled sides.

I get a Jones for chicken, I go to Popeye's and get an order of chicken strips, and all is right with the world.

41. None of them: MY Fried Chicken
And it comes out different every time! But it's always good

So many people think you just bread the raw chicken parts and fry. Unless you have a deep fryer pressure cooker, that will leave you with raw chicken. You have two options, and each has its ups and downs:

1 - You could boil the chicken first, then bread and fry

2 - You could fry the chicken first, then bake it for about 20-40 minutes

The first method might make the chicken inside a little rubbery, and the second method might make it dry

I have also heard of a third method, where you deep fry the chicken quickly, then bread, then refry

Haven't tried that tho
