What's a good movie for a first date?
I don't want to know for myself. I'm married. But my buddy likes a girl and I want to recommend a good flick for him to show her.
Something clever, without too much talking. Something arty, but not preachy. Something romantic, but not vulgar.

1. Movies are terrible first dates
You just sit there in a dark room and can't talk to each other.

Think of something else to do.

18. You get to talk after the movie and now you've got something in common to talk about.
Movies are a fine first date but you should pick one that lends itself to conversation afterward.

If you're both "arty" people, so much the better-- find an art house movie somewhere.

Something that makes you want to go get a coke or pie after.
The Last Seduction, Heavenly Creatures, Red Rock West.
All great arty films that made me wanna gab after.
Good call.

31. Big time agree.
Plus, there's that whole thing of being guarded as to how you react to the movie. And that whole odd way of judging if a movie is a first date.

I Laughed/Gasped/Cried/Yawned at a scene. He she instead Yawned/Cried/Gasped/Laughed.

Quirky, imaginative, artsy, romantic (but no overly so), feel-good, etc.

I think it would make a perfect date movie.

sure, it has some of those elements, but I think most men can appreciate a good & artsy foreign film.

Unless, of course, they are hyper-masculine.

P.S. I am not a girl. ;)

You're right, of course: men do appreciate good foreign film. Witness Like Water For Chocolate, or Volver, or Red.
I just thought Tatou was a little precious. Small quibble, that.

17. Thanks for the tip. I haven't seen this one.
It looks good on the surface even though are no stars.
I like that it looks to be controlled heavily by the writer. That's a good sign that it was greenlighted for a strong reason. The dialogue looks good.

Excerpt:
Eddie Brodsky: Sex is not a transitive act. It is an intransitive act.
Ray Obregon: If you talk like that to her, it will be a non-existent act.

I wonder, is the movie dealing with first dates more than being a good first date movie?

19. Age? Also...no movie.
I mean Tater hit it right off, a movie makes a terrible first date.

Take it from someone who is a pro at dating. (References available upon request.) The best first date activities are fun, exciting or interesting experiences*, leave a lot of time for talking and are not commitment-intensive. (ie. It's not going to feel like one is trapped if they decide 20 minutes in that this was a mistake and they want to bail. It's rude to actually do so, but having that "flight" availability puts people at ease and as a result everybody usually has a better time.) My go-to first date is dessert, drinks and some sort of hands-on learning experience. My best first date in the past year though was sledding down side streets in Mount Pleasant and hot chocolate.

If I had to recommend a movie for a first date though and the daters were both under 35 and hip, I might go with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: A guy after meeting the girl of his dreams has to fight all seven of her evil exes in a series of fighting-video-game inspired fights while winning a battle of the bands competition. It's just the right mix of serious and smart-alecky, funny and romantic, arty and not-very-preachy. It's a mediocre movie but it's fun for the situation. Good movies make bad dates.

*-People, regardless of gender or orientation, when asked to critique first dates report the highest satisfaction and attraction to their date on dates where they learned or experienced something new-to-them that their date is passionate about.

20. Tell him NOT to rent the movie "Knocked Up".
My brother-in-law, a widower whose late wife was the SWEETEST person, finally decided to take the plunge & go on a date. From his experience, I fully understand a man's need for dating advice; even intelligent men can be clueless when it comes to women.

My guess is that he associated dating with "must think young", so he took her to see "Knocked Up". She got upset during the movie & asked to leave the theater & go home.

The title alone was enough for me to understand how a mature woman on a first date would feel disrespected & cheapened (I thought it was hilarious  ), but my husband & I rented it to get the full effect. Juvenile says it best.

Poor BIL -- he had a rough start, but he's come a long way since then.

I've heard "Bridesmaids" is great.

24. Judd Apatow directed both Knocked Up and Bridesmaids
Did you once consider how ill at ease HE might become in a movie about women feeling left behind?
Sorry if that was harsh.
I loved Knocked Up and 40 YOV. Apatow has his finger on the pulse. And the comedy stands up, even if juvenile (hello, we're men?).
But I gotta think there's a happy medium for first daters. Less controversial and confrontational.
Like Princess Bride (possibly the best answer to this question).

It appeals to a broad spectrum: Bambi fans get to enjoy Bambi's appearance, Godzilla's fans get to enjoy Godzilla's appearance

It's also pretty short -- so people, who just don't like it, won't suffer long

29. Going to the movies is not a good idea for a first date! Two people who
are getting to know each other should go for a venue where they can talk and get to know each other. Just my two cents worth but due to inflation, that's a dollar!

in the theater..that should give you a time frame.

F.G. has everything a good first date movie should have: light romance, a little comedy, heartwarming crap, and social relevance without getting too deep into current issues.

If your buddy wants to watch a movie, he should probably take her to a theater -- maybe the kind where you have dinner and watch a show. Plugging in a DVD does not sound like a first date event.
