5. Samuel Taylor Coleridge ...

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an English poet, Romantic, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He is probably best known for his poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as for his major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. He coined many familiar words and phrases, including the celebrated suspension of disbelief. He was a major influence, via Emerson, on American transcendentalism.

Throughout his adult life, Coleridge suffered from crippling bouts of anxiety and depression; it has been speculated that he suffered from bipolar disorder, a mental disorder which was unknown during his life. Coleridge chose to treat these episodes with opium, becoming an addict in the process.

20. He wrote Kubla Kahn (one of his most famous poems) while tripping.
He claimed that the poem came to him while he was baked on Opium, and you kinda have to wonder about it if you've read much of his other work--this just reads different than anything else he'd done. Nobody knows for sure, but it is a pretty interesting story...

Kubla Khan
By Samuel Taylor Coleridge

In Xanadu did Kublai Khan
A stately Pleasure-Dome decree,
Where Alph, the sacred river ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers was girdled ’round,
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery...

Spicoli, but back in the 1970s. Acted/sounded just like him too, with the same stoner drone. You could get a contact high going into his room even before lighting up a fresh doob. And if Ben had ever had the idea to order himself a pizza and have it delivered to himself in class, he would have done it in a NY minute.

He didn't surf, though. Not a lot of surf in the Mpls suburbs. :hippie:

My favorite was his stoner dream where he was being confirmed for a job in front of the Senate Judicial Committee. They had him spliced in with people like Orrin Hatch, Ted Kennedy and even Joe Biden asking him questions. It was a funny scene.

...my old bass player(in the late 80-early 90s)'s dad was a director on some of the early episodes (the black & white ones) of "Gilligan's Island," and Bob was, to quote Jimi Hendrix, "experienced!"

Keep in mind, before that, he was the proverbial teevee "beatnik," Maynard G. Krebs, on the Dobie Gillis show.

I couldn't wait for it to end. Tommy's wife comes out on stage constantly throughout the old, rehashed material that was funny as a kid. She, by the way, is NOT a comedian. Annoying as hell. I used to think I liked hanging out with chronic tokers. But sitting in a crowd of burnouts was a complete waste of two hours...

...of the Yippies!

That is, as cartoon-ified in the animated music video, "Death Penalty For Pot" by Benedict Arnold & The Traitors.

Aron is the original Yippie! Pieman - the guy who pied Anita Bryant, Edward Teller, and Andy Warhol, to name but a few.

Dana is Dana Beal.

So this is Yippie! fact blended with stoner fiction.
