IMO, the show's over. Not that I'm a big fan of Charlie Sheen. But the show has officially jumped the shark by adding Ashton Kutcher. The producers think they can maintain the dynamic by changing a central character. It reminds me of NBC writing out Valerie Harper and changing the show from Valerie to Valerie's Family. They made the husband and kids the center of attention, added some wacky neighbors for comic relief (the Pooles), and expected to maintain ratings. It was a completely different show and the audience dwindled. Valerie Harper was the reason the audience was drawn to the show in the first place. While the ensemble in Two And A Half Men works well, some of the best lines are written for Sheen. That's gone. Kutcher is no substitute. Different, but not necessarily better. I give the show this upcoming season to say farewell to its viewers.

1. I think what they hope to do is finish out the show with a proper finale
Charlie just up and leaving would make it difficult to end the show. Charlie did the same thing when he came in for Michael J. Fox for the show "Spin City". I mean there was no way that Charlie Sheen could ever replace someone like Michael J. Fox but the producers wanted to give the show a proper series finale instead of just cutting it dead in it's track (mind you MJF left because of Parkinson unlike Sheen who left because 2 1/2 because he's loopted). Charlie Sheen only did about 1.5 years on the show but the writers & producers were able to give a proper ending to a show that was very well loved by the public.

2 1/2 Men is another very popular show very well beloved by the audience so to lose Sheen like that means the show either just had to stop dead in it's track or find an alternative to end it. I suspect they won't do more than 1-2 years with Kutchner, I think even Kutchner knows that and opted to do the show knowing that it wasn't going to be more than 1-2 years. The writers will then have a chance to create the finale and end the show properly.
