I'd like to get something to listen to while taking a long car trip
Can one download books on tape off of the internets and burn them to CD? How would one go about doing such a thing?

If not, can anyone suggest anything else to listen to during a 20 hour car trip?

1. Download them from Librivox as audiobooks, then drag them ito an iTunes playlist made up of them.
Select the playlist and burn it to a CD. They'll hold 700mg or about an hour. If the book is larger, you will have to burn two or more. It'll ask if you want to do it, just say yes and insert CDs as instructed.

They will play in your auto CD player, or as mp3s you can load them onto your iPod or other mp3 player and isten with earphones, an amped speaker or run the sound through your car speakers. That's the way I do it, but beware some readers can put you to sleep.

I burn a CD or load to my iPod a selected playlist of fast music or thought provoking lectures to stay alert. How you will play it back depends on what the laws are about earphones. Hope that helps.

9. Ugh. I wouldn't consider that thought-provoking. More like nausea. The second part of your question
Got me checking for commercially available audio books. These might keep you laughing for the entire trip, according to taste. Check out the editorial review on the page the '...America' page:

http://www.amazon.com/Daily-Stewart-Presents-America-Audiobook/dp/1586217011

http://www.amazon.com/Daily-Show-Stewart-Presents-Earth/dp/044657922X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b

I'm glad the books and the audio books made it to Amazon. I've got about 30gig of audiobooks. Most are fiction, but some are political. I like new age blather and I've downloaded lectures from youtube in mp3s. You might want to snag David Korten's lectures on ending this corporatist governance and new ways to live. Take music, too!

Enjoy your trip and tell us about all the cool scenery. During my last road trip I crossed 8 state boundaries and drove 16 hours a day. Since dealing with my passengers was like 'herding cats,' there was no chance of sleep until I got to the motel at night. Be careful!

4. I'd suggest Bill Bryson books
they'll make you laugh. Don't want anything political that will make you angry while driving.

Most libraries have books on CD that you can check out.

6. sounds like a fun trip- my husband always listens to books
on tape when he goes on long trips. I think he uploads em to his MP3-type player. Going anywhere cool? :hi:

I've been thinking about planning summer vacation to include some birding... I especially want to see some waterfowl this summer!

7. I think you can download "This American Life" and other NPR podcasts. I can't listen to audiobooks
when I'm driving; they put me to sleep.

8. I did a 16 hr trip once and just bought an audio book on CD from Borders
Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris was great. It kept me awake and alert so I could keep up with the story.

11. Just check them out from your local library on CD....then rip to your computer, then burn to cd.
Most libraries have an extensive collection of books on cd now...or even just check them out right before you leave and you won't need to burn them at all.

14. Bingo! And do this:
1. Ask for longer than 2 week checkout time if you need it. Most libraries will be happy to comply.
or

2. If they won't do that, mail them back when you reach destination.
Fairly inexpensive.

15. Satellite radio gets me through quite well
Radio Classics is extremely fun to listen to on long drives. Before you know it, you are there :)

Of course there are many other options as well
