The Royal wedding cake
took five weeks to make. ugh. I like my cake fresh

They celebrated their love for each other today in a lavish Royal Wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey and this is the extraordinary cake that they enjoyed at the reception.
Prince William and his bride Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, cut the first slice of the magnificent eight-tiered wedding cake this afternoon as they celebrated their marriage with friends and family.
The confectionery masterpiece covered in cream and white icing and decorated with up to 900 delicate sugar-paste flowers was centre-stage at the Buckingham Palace reception held in the picture gallery.
The project has left cake-maker Fiona Cairns exhausted but elated after working for five weeks on it which has tested her skills and those of her team to the limit.

We wrap ours up snugly, but covering in fondant would have much the same effect. If this cake tasted bad, its age would not have been the reason.

8. Fruitcake is different and takes weeks to make.
I'm guessing this one has a lot of liqueur in it (Gran Marnier maybe? Yum!) which is standard in a lot of these types of cake to "marinate" the citron, raisins, currants, dates etc.

Lovely decorations though (this thread is a welcome relief from the OBL threads by the way).

The wedding was suppose to be very green - even the flowers she used were local and the wedding bulletins were printed on recycled paper.

10. Very green wedding
The cake is soaked in brandy and very yummy, different than our typical fruit cake. The trees she had in the church are going to be planted at Highgrove so that was very nice also.

14. Beautifully decorated, it's a work of art!
I would not be able to cut that! Someone else would have to do it.

Engish traditional wedding cake and Christmas fruitcake is different from here. You can keep for a year and it still tastes great. It has lots of liquer in it to preserve it as pieces of the cake were often sent to relatives who could not come to the ceremony and also kept for the first year anniversary celebrations. I love traditional English/Irish wedding cake!

21. LOL, that's what everyone says, nobody wants to cut them. I make
cakes and that one would have taken me forever. I timed myself once when making flowers and it took me twenty minutes to make a rose. One year when my kids were in elementary school I made a cake that had the school on it for teacher appreciation day. I'd sat across the street and sketched the building and put it on the cake. It did look pretty cool, I had all the doors and windows, the flagpole, the flowers and trees, etc. I took it to the school in the morning and put it in the teacher's lounge. I came back at the end of the day and the whole middle of the cake, the part with the school was still there; they'd cut little tiny pieces around it, but nobody would cut the middle. Not long after that I got a job at the school and whenever I took a cake, I'd have a couple people look at it and then I'd plunge a knife into the middle because if I didn't do it, nobody would.

31. Lol, that's a cute story. I'm glad I'm not the only one
who feels that way! I like that they left all the good work and ate all around it. That's what I used to do with Chocolate Bunnies when I was little. I just couldn't eat the heads! I don't know how you were able to destroy your own creation though. I probably would have left and never looked back. :-)

35. Yeah, but it's a real pain at weddings - I almost always have to be
the one to cut the cake if I'm the one who made it. It's not as hard to destroy weeks' worth of work now that there are digital cameras. I used to tell brides that I'd make a duplicate of their top tier boxed for them to save for their anniversary so they didn't have to worry about saving and packing up the top of their wedding cake; no extra charge, I just want a picture of the cake. They all thought that was a great idea, but not one ever sent me a picture, lol.

39. No, no no! There are pictures to remember. When someone
makes a cake that takes weeks, the best part is that someone is eating and enjoying it. Believe me, if nobody ate it, the bakers would feel as if they'd done all that work for nothing. See my story above about the cake for the teachers who didn't eat it - I hated that I did all that work and they didn't even get to appreciate it.
