But ... take religion ... please!

Nobody has said anything nasty about Christians or anyone who believes in the Resurrection. Unless you're suggesting that merely commenting on a tenet of Christianity is somehow a direct attack on Christians.

On the other hand, there have been plenty of direct attacks upon myself and others in this thread and elsewhere on DU today.

I guess when you're used to being coddled and pandered to in almost every facet of life, any forum that doesn't treat you in the way you've become accustomed to can be a shock.

The religious are simply delusional. I do not have to "respect" anyone's beliefs. If you believe strange things, I expect you to explain the evidence for your beliefs, that is all. Believers do not have any such evidence, thus, making their beliefs fair game.

25. Oh, come on!
The worst disparagement of Christianity comes from supposed "Christians" who concentrate on the ludicrous supernatural aspects of Christian mythology and ignore the lessons of the Rabbi Yehoshua ben Yosef of Nazareth from his life, ministry & sacrifice in their day to day lives. They take the image of a homeless beggar who lived 2000 yrs ago & festoon it with gold & riches, yet they are blind to the homeless beggars around them.

Please. Don't even go there.

of Christians can be hurtful to Christians in the DU community. Responses to the handful of insensitive Easter threads in GD and The Lounge are evidence of the power we have to hurt others who don't believe/disbelieve as we do.

In a genuine community, respectful believers, skeptics and (like me) absolute unbelievers should feel safe and among friends. That doesn't mean debate won't be vigorous or that skepticism from all quarters won't be pressing, but it SHOULD mean we respect our DU neighbors and feel respected BY them. As an atheist in a generally Christian world, that feeling of "safe haven" means a great deal to me, and I would hope that DU people of faith could enjoy the same sense of inclusion.

I was raised Southern Baptist. I _get_ the anger from former fundamentalist Christians. But the majority of DU Christians aren't damning us unbelievers. They're just asking for consideration and sensitivity. I'm completely onboard with respecting -- especially on a day so important to them -- their beliefs.

61. DU is a diverse community. People here own a variety of beliefs that are precious to them.
Regardless of whether you share those beliefs, I believe we owe it to each other to respect each other's deeply held religious convictions. Even though I don't agree with them, I accept the fact that some people do not believe in a supreme being and I don't respect them any less for that. It's not even a consideration in how I deal with them on a day to day basis. I also respect the fact that some people worship God in a different way than I do - I believe that, if there is a God, he looks into peoples' hearts and values what is there, regardless of how they express it.

Hugabear's OP was designed to insult and hurt Christians on their most important day of the year. It was beneath contempt and I'm deeply disappointed that the Mods did not delete it straight away. In my view, he has forfeited any claim to respect or civil discourse from the DU community.

I learned a long time ago not to post things on the internet anonymously that I would not say to a person's face. You will rarely hurt people if yous stick to that and I believe that principled people generally follow that rule whether they are aware of it or not. I strongly doubt that Hugabear would stand behind his OP by identifying who he really is or actually saying it to anyone's face. For that reason, I would say that he is as cowardly as he is contemptible.

Isn't today about Jesus coming back to life, and coming out of the grave? Sounds like a zombie to me. Are people so sensitive about their religion that they can't handle a little joke?

What else should be off limits? Are we allowed to make jokes about parts of the Old Testament? What about the Rapture, which many Christians believe in? How about speaking in tongues, thrashing around, etc? There was a video posted recently here on DU showing a Pentecostal type service with loud singing and frenetic dancing around. Plenty of DUers jumped in to mock them...I don't recall seeing you or anyone in this thread jumpingg in to defend. Or is it only "normal" Christianity that we're not allowed to poke fun at?

67. Christianity is not about subjugation of women
Paul was defending women in Rome, by saying they did not have to sleep with men by being slaves or owned. Upset the wealthy by women making a choice of who they sleep with, not as property.

And Jesus defended someone in a crime that women were treated differently then men for, in most cases.

And Jesus had close association in teaching with women some considered against tradition.

You got that backwards, what writings are bias in text are more social bias of the time in my view.

You don't find many texts from that era without that bias.

Maybe some think of it that way, but really that is part of almost every culture back then, and still today in many areas.

Your comment is funny. LOL
