Total reverse sexism.

How would a commercial featuring average looking women getting grief from a hot male bartender fly?

1. That will teach all your average looking guys to quit trying to hit on
the hot babes. All us average looking gals are here too. So put your tongue back in your mouth and realize your limitations.

I don't really like those commercials because of the dumb "man up" slogan (like how manly you are has crapola to do what what kind of crappy lite beer you drink, please), but that said, the behavior they're mocking usually is considered pretty universally lame/douchey, so they end up being pretty clever anyway. But the notion that schlubby looking guys "deserve" to have hot ladies fawning all over them is one of the things about pop culture that irritates me the most.

I think my favorite one is the guy who speaks in txtspk, haha

21. The thing "average" gals need to remember ...
when we really like you, we see you as a hot babe. At least I do. If I really like a woman, I perceive her as being out of my league, even when she really isn't. The dream, I guess, is for her to feel the same way about me.

28. Nah, it doesn't.

I thought through a lot of reasons I could give for that, but they all rang hollow in some way. Really I think it comes down to something banal, idiotic and true:

It's kind of life-affirming to "get" the hot chicks and think you're out of the league of the women on the same level of attractiveness as you.

And for all the griping about it, women do it too.

(It's good for the self-esteem. Nobody thinks they're a 4.9 (out of 10) or worse, but intuitively and statistically we all know that 50% of us are. Someone's got to settle for all those other <=5s.)

Edit: I don't have the problem, I really am hot for a overweight, balding 31 year old man. That and I still pass for 24.)

3. I don't know why men
are not up in arms about the way they are portrayed in tv commercials - tv shows too.
How many ads are women getting stuck with what they consider to be losers? Ridicule
Some ads show men acting sheepish because their wives are acting lik shrews.
TV comedies show men are idiots.

Come on guys - it's time for you to start complaining.

Why are guys so okay with being portrayed as overgrown man-child morons, or as schlubby losers who do nothing but pig out on beer and nachos and donuts?

8. I agree. This Miller Lite campaign is stereotyping men
It's not fair to our brothers. If we women don't like being stereotyped as bimbos, we should stand up against stereotypes about men being either losers, sex-crazed animals, or incompetent housekeepers.

Sexism is sexism, be it prejudice against women or men, and it's gotta do where it belongs--right down the toilet! :hurts:

10. However, to whom do you complain?
How has all the complaining helped make the fashion industry stop portraying an anorexic stick of a woman as "sexy"? The great nudes of the fine art world are considered obese by their standards. And yet, nothing has changed. (or if it has, I haven't been able to tell as I don't read those kind of magazines.)

I'd love to complain to the ad agencies about how men are always portrayed as imbeciles in a kitchen, yet are suddenly a Top Chef when it comes to operating and cooking on their grill. Really?!

The problem is that most Americans simply don't care, men or women. Just don't interrupt the latest American Idle or mindless remake of a superb British show or there will be true hell to pay! ;)

13. Sounds like far too much effort
for far too little reward.

It's just TV. If characters and situations weren't exaggerated, it would be as boring as real life.

22. Well, I don't like the way men are portrayed, but ...
we've had such an unfair advantage for so long, it just seems unseemly to whine over these little slights.

Also, since I personally am nothing like the men in those commercials and shows, it makes me look good by comparison.

Also, every group gets joked about and made fun of to some extent. It's *unmanly* to dish it out and then not be able to take it.

I don't find the commercial sexist.

The guy is a tool. Who the hell wears Speedos anyway????

The bartender was making fun of his choice of apparel, not the fact that he was "average".

I get fed up with ugly egotistical European men running around in inappropriate speedos, too, and I'm a guy.

Actually what I think is more sexist is that the women in the video are always hot women with big breasts; this ad was no different, and thus I think ironically is a typical male chauvinistic video, not an anti-male video.

Edited on Fri Mar-25-11 07:29 AM by distantearlywarning
And the notion that women care about whether some guy isn't wearing attire that's manly enough.

Newsflash: The only people who care about the whole "man up" bullshit are MEN. You guys enforce that crap on yourselves. It has nothing to do with women and their preferences.

It's kind of like the truism that women dress for other women, not for men. Most men don't care whether a woman is wearing Jimmy Choo shoes - only other women care about stuff like that.

The way I see it, it's simply behavior they're making fun of.

Besides, it's humor. If you can't make fun of idiotic behavior, what's left?
