"Not Selected" x8. I HATE unemployment. Could use some vibes.
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 02:58 PM by UrbScotty
A lot of companies have online employment application systems, where you create a profile, upload your resume, and type in your info just once so you don't have to do it every time you apply for a job with the company.

On Friday I applied to eight different positions at a company, for all of which I was more than qualified.

I tried to put in a lot of keywords in my appplication, cover letter, and resume, so I wouldn't get screened out by a computer (as often happens nowadays).

Well today I logged in and saw this:

Not Selected
Not Selected
Not Selected
Not Selected
Not Selected
Not Selected
Not Selected
Not Selected

Just a couple days after I applied, they've already decided that they don't want my talents.

How much time have I spent tailoring my resume and cover letter, making each look attractive and attention-grabbing?

How much longer must I wait to have the same chance at success that others have?

I could use some vibes.

1. Vibes for you
I'm going through the same thing on a micro level (trying to get a summer internship for law school) and it's easily the most demeaning, discouraging, self-esteem killing process I've ever gone through. It took me over a month to even get a phone interview, and still no word. It sucks, but I think volume does help - just keep throwing your resume out there until it sticks. Not great advice, but about all I've got. Hang in there!

5. Vibes away!

Before I got the "temporary" job I have now (it's lasted three months+ past when it was supposed to stop) I was unemployed for a little over a year. I listened to others talk about using that time as an opportunity to get other things done, and I did. Got more writing done, a little more 'stuff' tossed out, and divorced (got down on the paperwork and then to the courthouse while I had the "free" time.)

If there's anything in your life that you'd like to improve that either doesn't cost anything or not much, now's the time to do it :D

6. I can only offer you this
I wont go into details but in the mid 90's my life had turned to such shit that I was seriously considering suicide. Through a series of events that I had no influence on and no control over, at the age of 54, I ended up loseing everything I had spent my entire life building up. All I can tell you is that no matter how things are now, THEY WILL CHANGE! The lesson I finally learned is that life ebbs and it flows but no matter what, it will not stay where it is.

I had to apply this lesson not too long ago. I, like you, had been unemployed for so long that I had reached a point where I had absolutly no idea how I was going to get through the next month. I know exactly how you must feel. The constant knot in your stomach, the dread when the phone rings because you know it is from someone that you can't pay, telling you what a deadbeat your are even though you have spent your whole life trying to be responsible, the complete loss of self esteem. First, you need to realize that the people on the other end of the phone are there because they couldn't find a better job either, I mean really, would you do that for a living if you had a better option? The second thing you need to realize is that, in spite of what they tell you, most probably, this is not your fault! You probably believed, like most of us, that if you worked hard and played by the rules, you would be O.K. You were lied to. The system is rigged and it is not rigged in your favor.

All I can tell you is that life is not stagnent. Wherever you are at the moment, you will not be in the same place 6 months from now. It may be better, it may be worse, but you will not be where you are now.

For what it's worth, every recession I've been through in the last 60 years has eventually ended and things have gotten better. I think the Republicans are over playing their hand at the moment and the tide is turning. Eventually, we will have to deal with the decline of infrastructure and the people left on the streets and there will be a big push back from the disinfranchised. It has happened throughout history and I think it will happen now. It won't happen (in my opinion) the same way as in the past , ala French Revolution, because we have much faster communication, but I believe it will happen. I see it in Minnasota. Isee it on the streets in Tucson. I see it in my gradson's attitude. I see it in Egypt. The tide is turning.

Feel good about yourself! You are not even remotly alone! Millions of us are where you are and we are not happy! THINGS WILL NOT STAY THE SAME!

7. If you can afford to take a few months off your job hunt and volunteer why not
create an unpaid internship for yourself? I did. I wrote the the exact government department I wanted experience in and they let me work there for a few months. I found out about my limitations (which I had never had a chance to find out about before because in my internship they let me try different kinds of work), I networked and I got references. Then you come away from it with a resume which is exactly who you are.

Either way. Good luck to you!

9. I may sound old school but
I wouldn't trust an anonymous online app for any gig. I think you are better off networking with friends and former colleagues and getting IN PERSON INTERVIEWS! Don't rely on impersonal online apps.

Don't get discouraged, many companies post these so called online apps when they have already filled the positions with friends of friends, etc. just to appear fair minded and YOU are not really being considered.

It's certainly not a fair assessment of your employability.
