Video Gamers: Why do people act like the 16 bit war...
... between the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo was a tie? Or that Sega won?

The numbers don't lie - The Super Nintendo sold more systems and more games than the Genesis, even though the Genesis came out about two years earlier. I even know people who got rid of their Genesis and bought a Super Nintendo.

The Genesis had some awesome games - the Sonic games and sports games were excellent - but most games were simply better on the SNES.

1. I owned a Genesis
I loved it. Came with a Lion King game which I enjoyed(Only time I enjoyed a game that came with a console). I also had Sonic and the rest were sports games. I had a NHL game that was a blast to play, IIRC, there was fighting and the loser of the fight had to go to the penalty box.

Every time I would visit my dad's side of the family I would play Nintendo which I also liked. Specifically the Mario and Donkey Kong games.

This brings back memories. I recall after those 2 the Nintendo 64 was the must-have. Then came Playstation which I had to have. After that was the Dreamcast for Sega. I probably anticipated that over any console that ever came out. Didn't last very long but it had great graphics and some good games. Playstation 2 and Xbox came out and they had better games. I would like to save up and buy the Playstation 3 but I'm sure something better will come out but I think we'll have 360 and PS3 for quite some time before that happens.

2. I worked at Hardees all summer just so I could buy both and some games
i started with Genesis back when i was 16. Got Altered Beast which came with it and (best VG purchase ever) bought Phantasy Star II for the crazy high price at the time of $69.99. Loved it. My buddy also bought one and he got Golden Axe as his second game - fun but no PSII that's for sure.

The SNES kinda cheated to make their games run faster - they only rendered every other line on the screen effectively giving it twice the power it should have had. That and the color pallette was what made the SNES seem superior to many people but I loved both.

As for now - I'm a solid PC gamer all the way. No consoles for me. I've got emulators that run all the SNES games (all SNES games ever made can fit on one blank CD-R - not DVD-R, CD-R FYI) and Genesis games, 4 logitech gamepads, as well as some other cool shit. Full speed PS1 emulator too so I can play Wipeout 3 Special Edition (normally only available in Europe) - even a full speed PS2 emulator to play Wipeout Pulse (another European exclusive). But with PC games like Crysis which are awesome, I see no need to waste $$$ on a console anymore.

But SNES and Genesis - ah, those were the days. :)

5. There are still homebrew games coming out for Dreamcast.
A couple of SHMUPS and others.

Wish I'd have gotten a Dreamcast now.

4. Rampart was definitely better on Genesis
the SNES version has a very rigid cross-hair system which only let you move in increments. With the Genesis version the cross-hairs moved smoothly like a mouse or trackball would. Most games looked best on SNES and I did prefer that system in the end, but I also LOVED my Genesis. I thought NBA Jam played better on Genesis as well.

6. I had both but the SNES was much better.
Edited on Mon Mar-14-11 12:38 AM by Lucian
My favorite games on the SNES were the Donkey Kong Country games, the first and the second ones especially. I also enjoyed Gradius III, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, and Mario RPG. My favorite all time SNES game: Super Metroid. The only games I enjoyed on the Genesis were the Sonic games, Aladdin, The Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse, and a game I had called Decap Attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decap_Attack).

7. What you are asking is: Why do people treat their opinions as fact?
And I could ask the same thing of you.

8. I owned a Genesis
And the only SNES games I've played were the ones that were ported to other systems. That doesn't mean that I dislike the SNES now, in fact I'm still looking for one that isn't overpriced. It's just that back then, I disliked Nintendo's early stance on censorship, especially regarding the violence in Mortal Kombat I.
