Does anyone have a recommendation for a "sex ed" book for an 11-year-old girl?
She has the American Girl "The Care and Keeping of You" book, which has been good for introducing her to body and puberty issues, etc. I'd like a book that covers sex basics at an age-appropriate level. She knows the fundamentals, but it would be good to expand on it a bit. Her 5th grade class starts a health/sex unit pretty soon, so I think the time is ripe. Thanks. :hi:

1. I'll be checking this thread for ideas, too.
I love the American Girl book. It is so frank and matter-of-fact.

2. "Dora The Explorer Does Dallas"
Just kidding. I'll have to ask my wife. We have three daughters (older now) but I don't remember any books for the 11-year old-ish period.

3. Perfect!
;)

Yeah, it seems tricky to find a good book. I ordered one for her, but after seeing it I feel like it would be more appropriate for a 13-or 14-year old. I don't want to overwhelm her with too many graphic details at a relatively young age. "Just the facts, ma'am."

4. On an unrelated subject (other than proximity) - "The Gas We Pass - The Story of Farts"
I bought that for my grandmother 20 or so years ago. Good book.

5. I think I got that for my nieces when they were little.
The parents were thrilled. :)

It was sort of fascinating, though.

But yes, everyone poops: :hurts:

11. I've been considering buying my 13 year old a copy of Our Bodies Ourselves.
Boston Women's Health Collective did it right the first time a few decades ago, and I still think it might be one of the best books out there for women wanting straight up information without spin or opinions.

I dunno if I think an 11 year old is ready for it--but then again--I never cease to be amazed at how much they know now...

You might want to check with your local Planned Parenthood for ideas about age appropriate information sources.

18. "Our Bodies" is a classic and needs to be in every home library...
as to age specific books, call the research librarian at your local library...bet she/he has a list already made up.

21. The Kotex book! That's what my mother gave me too.

This was also in the sixties. It blows my mind in a way how much kids know these days and how early they know it. I was so sheltered that I didn't even know much about sex when I was in high school.

26. They were never even mentioned.
She probably figured that if she didn't mention them, I wouldn't know about them. Besides, she was the one who bought the products.

I think I sort of knew about them, but didn't know much. I probably would have been afraid to try them anyway. I was sheltered.

22. Check out "It's Perfectly Normal" by Robie Harris
My rents gave it to me, about that age. Lots of good info, just the facts, and illustrations. Throws it all out there in a very upfront and mature way.

24. My 9 year old daughter has informed us that she doesn't want to have a baby because...
"she doesn't want to squeeze a baby out of her butt." (Her exact words).

I would be interested in this book, too.
