I just wrestled with a computer virus for 48 hours.

And somehow I won. I completely lost control of my computer and lost access to the internet. I kept using my antivirus scan over and over in safe mode and it would keep finding the same trojan and quarantining it but then it never seemed to save and when I went back into regular mode the virus was still taking over my computer. I'm not even sure the one I kept seeing was causing the problem.

Finally I looked in the task manager and saw a weird executable. I ended the process. Then I searched for it, renamed it and deleted it. Now everything is fine.

Computer viruses are hell.

4. First thing I do is turn OFF system restore.
Windows sometimes acts like a virus. If you have an infected restore point, it will put it right back into your system. One of the reasons I have an image of my C: drive is if becomes too much hassle, I just restore C: from image copy and I'm back up and running in 15 minutes. And I keep NO data on my C: partition so I won't lose any of the data.
