I'm looking for a good (for athletes) vegetarian diet
I am getting back into running (if Al Gore ever lets it get warm again!!!) and just read about some fantastic ultramarathoners in "Born to Run" many of whom are vegetarians.

So what you vegetarians got?

Hummus (I like)
Pita (white bread actually has less fat, right?)
Peanut Butter
Veggies (love them)

Any advice or links would be greatly appreciated.

4. Are you doing this for fun/fitness, or competitively?
If the latter, one very important concept is glycemic index. If you are training at very high levels, you must eat/fuel up beginning 30 minutes after the workout, in order to load food value for the next hard workout. When I was doing triathlons, was working out 2 times a day, it was imperative to fuel up in order to have energy for the next workout.

If you are doing this for fun/fitness, eat what you like and don't worry about it, veggie, vegan or carnivore. Not as critical at that energy level.

5. underpants, underpants, underpants
Have you learned nothing from me all these years? Vegetarians (and even more so, those pesky vegans) can't be good athletes.

Lounge humor, I kid of course.

PM me, lets talk. I think I can help you out. Remember that food is fuel, and it's about getting the right nutrition at the right time. Especially for long distance runners or ultramarathoners.

Besides, vegetarians have just about everything the omnis have. We even have bacon.

Yes, bacon.

7. Don't eat Vegetarians
They are stringy and will give you gas.

It also takes several of them to equal one good couch potato.

10. Not sure
James Jones (Forward for the Miami Heat) is a vegetarian who mentioned steamed broccoli, steamed asparagus and brown rice.

Tony Gonzales mentions he.... He loads up on berries, bananas and mangoes, fresh vegetables and milk alternatives like rice milk or hemp milk, then blends them into what he calls "power smoothies."

I know of other athletes that the link mentions, mainly Ricky Williams. But I can't find anything online as to what exactly his diet is.
