My close encounter with a teenage deer today.
My route home from work here in southwestern NH is via a long winding country road that winds its way under and around Mt. Monadnock. We have about 3 feet of snow on the ground with snowbanks of about 5 feet along the sides of the road created by the plows. I came around a corner and about 50 feet in front of me was a small deer galloping right down the center of the road. I slowed down, stayed well behind and followed it. It was desperately looking for a place to get off the road and back into the woods. It would vault over the snowbanks and then get stuck in the deep snow. It would then stumble back over the bank, back on to the road and resume its desperate run. Finally, after about a mile of this, the deer came upon a logging road that had been partially plowed. It made its exit and I cheered. It has been a very tough winter for the critters up here!

1. I hit, and killed, a deer a few years back
on my way home from work at midnight. Totaled my car. I escaped injury.

2. That is my worst nightmare! I had a near miss with a Moose once...
I suspect there would have been personal injury with that critter.

3. Melrose looked like WW I trenches.
Sidewalks that were cleared had 5 and 6 foot berms on either side.
They were trucking snow out of town.
Just another reason I live in Alabama.
