I have no heat in my house. It's -2 outside, 47 inside.
I was gone all day, got home about 10:00 p.m., it was colder than a welldigger's arse, no heat. Radiators stone cold. Thermostat seems to work but there's no heat. Gas company is too busy, can't come til after 8:00 tomorrow morning. Called a bunch of other places advertising 24-hour service on their web sites, all I got was voicemail. Finally got a live body on the phone; they said they might be able to come out after about 4 hours. Called another place, found another live human, finally somebody who can come right away. $250 for an emergency service call (plus whatever the repairs will cost). But they said they could be here in about a half an hour.

I'm sitting here all bundled up in a parka; the cats are running around like lunatics. Maybe they are trying to keep warm.

This sucks.

4. careful of water pipes freezing tonight
That would be a crappy way of having insult piled onto injury.

I'm sorry that's happened :( I hope you get some relief soon!

5. leave your water running a bit to keep your pipes from freezing
you will be OK

we had a FREAK temp drop the other night - got down to 5.9 F which is pretty unheard of around here, the wind howled and since my kitchen door doesn't really have a latch it blew open - despite being tied shut with a bungee cord. It got to 24 INSIDE - froze half a rubber plant, my new poinsettia and an aloe vera INSIDE, never mind the poor plants out on the porch.

so my advice if the emergency guy doesn't show, is cover your houseplants and add a couple more blankets to the bed, you will survive. (I was pretty comfortable until I got up that day)

pretty freaky to have the refrigerator be warmer than the kitchen, I tell ya!

6. If you have a gas stove
Run the oven at a low temp for heat. Same with electric. You can also heat by boiling pans of water. I've done that when the power's gone out. Dana ; )

7. The repair guy just showed up.
The igniter in my furnace was kaput and has to be replaced -- it's gonna cost a bundle but I guess it's better than freezing. I'm letting water trickle from the kitchen and bathroom faucets and I've turned on the oven. But I can see my breath, and it will take hours to get the place warm again.

I really need a new furnace -- this one is 25 years old. You never run out of things to spend money on when you live in an old house.

8. Isn't it amazing how your whole house changes when there's no heat?
It becomes an unwelcoming cavern rather than your private retreat. Our furnace died a few weeks ago. Thank jeebus for the wood stove. Hope you're getting warm. BTW I love Minn. Mr. yankeepants and I want to come out one year and rent an ice shanty.

9. Duct-tape the cats to your body to conserve body heat.
And this would be an excellent time to curl up in a small room with an electric heater and a big blanket.

Take care!

10. Ahhh. It's finally starting to warm up.
The furnace is fixed (many $$$ later; I should have gone into the plumbing & heating biz); the radiators are warm; I can't see my breath any more. The cats have finally settled down. I think they were running around just to keep warm. I guess I'll go to bed now.
