"Johnny Winter, a guy who would yell "YEAAAAHHHHHH!" at the drop of an E chord..."
I remember an old review about a Johnny Winter CD in which the writer referred to Johnny as "a guy who would yell "YEAAAAHHHHHH!" at the drop of an E chord..."

And really, any self-respecting Johnny Winter fan's got to admit that he was right...are there actually any songs in which he DOESN'T yell "YEAAAAHHHHHH?"

I'm listening to the 2-CD Legacy Edition of "Second Winter"...HIGHLY recommended for both the original album (trivia buffs will remember that it was a "three sided two record set"...a double album with one blank side) as well as the "bonus CD" with some paint-peeling, scorching live tracks.

"YEAAAAHHHHHH!"

:-)

1. I remember having an album
that he says (as far as I remember) "people keep asking where's my brother" then everyone cheers as the brother comes out. I think it was called Guitars that Destroyed the World (mix of various artist).

2. That was Edgar Winter's "Roadwork"...
...and you might have had a compilation album that pulled that track.

Rick Derringer performs Chuck Berry's "Back In The USA," and at the conclusion, Edgar says "People keep askin' me...(dramatic pause)...where's your brother?" Then Johnny comes out and yells "Hi! It's good to be back" before tearing into "Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo."

One of the greatest rock and roll moments EVER.

3. Saw him one night at the Dillo
He started out by sitting in a chair onstage with an acoustic 12-string and playing some old blues.

Of course some idiot had to scream out "Rock 'N' Roll"

Johnny just stopped and looked at the fool and said "There'll be plenty of that later, but this is where it came from"

The crowd looked like they were going to stomp on the idiot.

5. HEY what year was that?
I think I was supposed to go to that concert but ended up having to work (I worked in the basement of the 20 story gold glass American Bank building on 6th Street) :D

6. Saw him in about 1977 at the Chicago Stadium
Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters, doing the finale, a long bluesy version of Kansas City, when Johnny Winters walks out and starts jamming with them.

Perfect Blues Rock Moment...

8. If Johnny had never played a single note...
...he'd STILL get his wings for Muddy's final albums on Blue Sky. Legends are supposed to go out in style...with Johnny's help, Muddy did.

9. Highway 61 revisited from the LIVE album is one of my all time favorites.
Seldom do you see a guitarist come out blazing from the very start...

But for sheer blues mastery, check this out.
He was searing before the smack took a chink of that sear away.
And yet he remained, amazing.

Here is here before the drugs...

13. Yep, a classic...
...I listened to "Second Winter" and "Johnny Winter And Live" yesterday. I lost track of the "YEAHHHHHHs" but they all worked just fine.

14. I vaguely remember my FAVORITE album of his would have been in the early 70's...
.
.
.
...and if I amember correctly (it WAS the early 70's, you unnerstand), it was all
really laidback acoustic delta blues. A reddish album with a stylized minimalized
monochromatic white photo of him on the cover?????
.
We have a longtime great blues band here in Tucson name of Tony & the Torpedos.
.
Tony Uribe (frontman lead guitarist) is not the LEAST bit flashy -- so his brilliance
usually sneaks up on people -- but it IS eventually undeniable.
.
When I worked radio, he came in and played a coupla acoustic songs onair. I hadn't
ever heard him play wooden music and I was just knocked right off my feet -- probably
even more so than with his electric stuff.
.
He said electric blues crowds can be dismissive of acoustic blues -- but I've heard
since then (long ago) he WILL play a little taste of it now and then.
.
Maybe his usual crowd as a whole can't wait for him to "get over that self-indulgent
shit"... but I just KNOW there are some real blueslovers in the audience who are taken
to incredible heights (depths? Aw, fuck it... it's blues) -- depth-heights.
.
.
.
