I thought this might make for an interesting tale for any DUer bored enough to be browsing the lounge right now
I come from an alpine skiing background. My favorite event was giant slalom so naturally I'm pretty comfortable with speed and love the feel of getting really super high on the edges of my skis to make those nice perfect railroad tracks. Yesterday as I was feeding my need for speed with a friend of mine, we both ended up in each others mutual blind spots. As he made a turn he went over my skis catching me completely off guard and causing me to lose my composure. We were both somewhere in the 35-40mph range and next thing I know I'm tumbling down the mountain at this mighty speed with my skis and polls far behind me.
I went careening off the trail into a ditch and smashed into a few trees. I was somewhat dazed and a little battered, but much to the amazement and relief of a tiny crowd that had gathered presuming I was gravely injured or possibly dead, I got up and began walking within a few seconds of impact. I think there was an air of disbelief as a put on both of my skis, assured everyone I was fine and skied down to the bottom to call it a day. I had managed to completely destroy one of my ski boots in the impact, it now has a lovely 12 inch crack through the thickest part of the shell, but thankfully, it is under warranty. So there you have it, my tumble with death. Somehow I won today but I'm sure he's plotting his next move. I just hope it involves a comfy bed after a long and meaningful life and not some terrible and well crafted death like that awful movie Final Destination.
This is the second time I've been lucky. Once I was hit by a car going about 20 mph, I got up and walked away but did $1500 worth of body damage to the vehicle.
I'm now celebrating my second chance on life by studying for the LSATs...
