Are there any normal chat rooms anymore?

It's been about ten years since I've been in a chat room. Just got out of it but being that I spend more time at home now I thought it would be fun to check it out again but all the ones I used to visit are either gone or full of hookers, pornsites and webcam girls.

I'm just looking to meet and chat with different folks who are just normal folks. I'm thinking maybe a pay, members only chat site might work where there's a bit of screening to weed out the webcam and porn site users.

Any recommendations?

Anything from "10 years ago" in the internet world is very ancient history. USENET, billboards, chat rooms, user forums, etc. are almost entirely "dead" which is to say that at the very best they are either populated with the content you describe, or in some rare cases, "old folks" that still come around once and a bit. With chat rooms I'd bet you won't find much.

Instant messaging really sucked the life out of chat rooms.

I just signed up for Talk City, which is a website that hosts a variety of different chat rooms. I haven't visited any of the rooms yet, so I can't give an opinion about the content. But based on what I've read on the site so far, it seems like there are a number of rooms there that are not just all about the hook-up and where content other than hooking up is discussed.

Then again, I can't claim that with any certainty, not having visited any chat rooms on the site yet. Has anyone else here used Talk City?

6. I'll never forget chat.

Light years ago when I first entered the Internet, my first experience with chat was an AOL forum run by the ACLU. It was the only uncensored site on AOL, called the Free Speech Zone. There were lefties and wingnuts and all kinds of people. That place just rocked. I learned a lot of new words, but I also had great conversations. You could carry on private IMs while chatting, and have a dozen conversations going at once.

I miss it a lot. There are still dozens of chat rooms on AOL, but I haven't checked them out in ever so long. Some are topical, some are related to locality.

One of my old Free Speech Zone friends was here on DU for a time; left a couple of years ago for myspace.

8. I have met great people in chat rooms. I'm still in touch with some of them.

The best one was the old ChatforAmerica when Dean was running in 2004.

CNN also had a terrific live chat. I was there every night until they axed it.
