The Past Tense of "Ask" Is?
I am a (college) English teacher correcting the last of this semester's essays. Keep in mind I am in North Jersey.

My student wrote, "One day while they were in class together one girl was acted to a party by her crush."

So I pondered this for awhile, trying to understand where this student was coming from. Then it hit me. She was trying to form the past tense of the verb "ask." In her world, however, the word is "axt," so she wrote "acted."

Yes, you heard me right: She was trying to form the past tense of a word that does not exist and she ended up with a word that exists but that does in the least pertain to what she is trying to say.

Looking toward the future, I never in a million years thought I would be starting off my classes with "'Axt' is not a word."

Cher

4. This would be the same student who would describe a classroom as being
full of "desses."

There's no hope.

a word some people believe to be Japanese: "dattebayo". Not long ago I met a fellow in my chat room who told me he learned Japanese by watching the anime Naruto. I tried to explain to him that Japanese is a language based on levels of politeness and that many of the words used by his Anime hero is considered rough and in many cases insulting, which brings me to the fact that he believed that Naruto's "dattebayo" was in fact a real Japanese word.

Its not. It was the creation of the original writer of the program, who was looking for something unique for Naruto to say. Sort of like Fred Flintstone's "Yabadabado!". Its not a real word. Of course, this fellow didn't believe me, and planned on saying "dattebayo" after every sentence expecting the Japanese population to make sense of his words.

Its well past the time of him leaving for Japan. If he did go, and insisted on using the language he learned from the anime, my guess is he has either been beaten up or laughed at by now, and has no clue why. I tried to explain to him in regards to the language in this way...

Imagine a person from another country, learned ENGLISH by only listening to Rap songs. Could you imagine him coming to America and trying to get an interview for a high paid job? Its the same with learning Japanese. The only way to learn to speak properly is to take a certified course in the language.

He told me that was bullshit. I guess we shall see who is right.

6. Iunno. Lemme tex onama frens and axe.
I regularly get texts that make what I just put in the title look like proper spelling. Normally from one particular cousin. I am still trying to figure out how someone who always has to buy the newest smart phone can do that, given that most phones try to autocorrect things.

9. To me it's always been like, "I'm going to axe you."
And then past tense would be, "Yes ossifer, I said I axed him."

I guess I've been spelling that wrong. Funny spell checker didn't pick that up.
