I got somethin' cookin' in the Crock Pot.....
I've been craving some beans, and I had a lonely bag of them in the cabinet.

I'm expecting these to be ready for lunchtime.

You might ask, "Where's the hambone?"... Well, I grew up with bacon in the beans. Probably not this much bacon, but I digress. What's better than a little bacon? A lot of bacon, of course.

Anyway, it cooks nice and slow, and the pork fat breaks down and gets in the flavor of the beans...

So, I'm going to cook up some cornbread, some fried potatoes, and maybe even get me a really loud white onion. Those are the best with beans.

1. Pinto beans with cornbread is one of my favorite meals
No one else in my family is particularly fond of beans, so I don't make them much. But for me, beans, cornbread and buttermilk are so good.

2. You're making me hungry
I'm going to have to rummage through the pantry to find something to pop into the crock pot.

3. You do like a lot of bacon! I use bacon, too, plus ham or salt pork.
Beans & cornbread -- yummy! My favorite beans are purple hull, crowder, & field peas. I make my cornbread with white cornmeal, buttermilk, & bacon drippings.

I know you're going to enjoy yours!

7. Making my mouth water.....
Yep. Guess it is about that time of year to break out the ole crock pot. Thanks for the reminder!

Incidentally, when I am out of bacon, sometimes I sprinkle about half of a packet of Goya brand "Ham Flavored Concentrate" as I cook my green beans. (The packaging is usually in spanish...so I just look for the picure of the pig.)

One of my favorite meals to prepare in a crock pot only takes 3 ingredients: Sauerkraut, any inexpensive large cut of pork and water to cover the top. Ummm. Ummm. Ummm :-)

another meal that no one but me will enjoy in this house.... but I'm making it anyway! :)

This 'Ham Flavored Concentrate' - is it located in the 'Hispanic Food' section of the store?

11. I want to know too
The ham flavoring that comes in the split pea bag doesn't actually contain any animal products, but it tastes quite good.

12. I find it either in the hispanic section or in *regular* aisle with bouillon cubes

10. Pinto beans
I don't add any fat in them at all - love the taste of refried beans or just plain pinto bean soup. The cilantro and other spices give the flavors.
